Cottonwod experts?

Alright for a project I ahve a few baby cottonwoods right now.. dont ask. Anyway they are from some of the oldest trees in the area and well had to do it. So here is my question can these be kept with trimming to a small tree/large shrub like some trees or do I ahve to let them get tall - it would be over 100 ft. I have thought about bending them down every 10 feet or so to form little arches too like I have seen in Mexico with ficus but I did not know if they would do this alright - any ideas?

You didn't mention the species, but all three species are known for weak brittle wood. We have several native Eastern Cottonwood trees growing by the creek here on the ranch. From the shape they have, they wouldn't have been easy to bend. The branches are not long. They need wet soil. Don't live long. You would have to do a lot of pruning and might end up with something that resembles a pollarded sycamore.

Species I dont know.. I am going them to find that out for a local prject. They are not in moist soil, wet soil or anything near moist soil... Would pollarding work for these trees? So far the branches are rather long and have only grown out about 4 foot long from the whips I cut and babied all year. I would plant them in the park - we want some from the local champion to be in the park in time - just we need to find out more about them in for the time being.
