This is indeed a wasp, most likely in the superfamily Sphecoidea - dorsal and lateral views would be most helpful in pinning it down further.

This is a spider wasp (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/2cakxg7 and http://tinyurl.com/25qsr47 for very similar specimens. Unfortunately, I cannot be more specific.

Thanks. More closer to the first link - actually it was taken at a place called Chennai - on the east coast. It is about 300 miles from here.
