Fall Round Robin seed trade

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi y'all!

You know I love to trade seeds since I have had delicious luck with seeds from DGers this year! I was wondering if some of you might be interested in doing a Round Robin for EACH ..... Butterfly NECTAR Plant seeds ...... AND ...... also a RR seed trade for HOST plant seeds?

I, personally, would be interested in BOTH RR seed trades.

Here is how it works. We first set a participation limit ..... say 10-15 people for EACH RR.
Rules are simple, DG subscribers only .... preferably folks from this Forum. Host seeds in one large bubble envie and Nectar seeds in another large bubble envie. I will start it off with say 25-30 seed packets. I will get a list started by number of the order you signed up. I will be number 1 and then will send the envie to the person who is number 2 on the list of each RR. That person will take out as many packs as you like, replace with an equal number of seed packs, of equal quality. (No more than 2 packs of the same seeds in the bubble envie at a time.) Then #2 adds number #3 participant name & address to the front of the envie and spends the postage to mail it on and so forth. If the robin travels quickly, we could consider sending it around for a second trip.

If there is enough interest. I will start 2 RR threads (One for host and one for nectar seeds).

I thought this might be a great way to share some of our butterfly loving plant seeds with others and to also get some seeds you'd like to try growing!

This thread is strictly to see who might be interested to see if either of these RR would fly! If you think you might be interested in participating, post here on this thread and tell me which seed RR you'd be interested in .... Nectar, Host, or both! And also let me know when you'd like to start this in the Fall (after we have all had time to collect some seeds from our gardens or out and around from our community). October, November, or December??? Each packet of seeds must be labeled with the common and scientific names as well as who they are from and the month & year they were harvested from your plants. The fresher the seeds... the better! Commercial seed packets with 2008 planting expiration would also be acceptable for those that don't have many plant seeds to harvest in your yard yet.

If this doesn't fly, that's okay. I just thought it would be fun, so I am testing the possibilities to see what amount of interest there is here for these 2 RRs. Thanks!

I'm in.....any way and time is fine with me!

Sounds good to me too but can I suggest with the price of postage that we do both together with the stipulation that you replace host plant for host plant seed and nectar for nectar seed?? There are going to be far more nectar than host plant seed being traded and doing just host plant alone may not be worth the postage since most of us are going to have the same seed anyway. ex. milkweeds, dill, parsley, fennel.....

How ever you want to do it Becky is fine with me. Have been collecting seed already lol. What ever I have lots of I will put in some extras for the taking without requiring a trade. list will be included for those seed. Like I have a abundance of A. fimbriata and Silkygold Milkweed right now I just harvested and should have a abundance of clitoria and passiflora by fall all which are host plants. Let me know if this is o.k.

Sounds like fun, but I don't have any interesting seeds to trade right now, so will have to pass...unless I can think of something...

Anyway, sounds like a neat idea!

Donna - I don't have a problem at all to do the Host and Nectar seeds together. I didn't know if everyone would want to do BOTH, so that's what I was trying to find out. Your idea is very cost effective and a very good idea. Thanks for suggesting it! What month do you want to start the RR, Donna?

So ..... for anyone reading this thread ..... please take note that the RR will be a combined trade for one postage. We will put both Host and Nectar seeds packets in 2 separate large baggies (so we know what is nectar and what is host) and send them out together in the same large bubble envie! :-) The rule is that you replace however many host seed packets you take with other host seeds and any nectar seed packets should be replaced with other nectar seed packets. You can take however many you want but replace with an equal (or greater) amount of seed packets!

Sounds like a great RR! :-)

Judy - You can do commercially sold seeds, too. (Though not as cost effective as free.) And you can pick seeds from your local park and store landscaping plants as well. I have gotten out of my car many a time for seeds from commercial landscaping at the mall, fast food restaurants, local park, etc. Just a suggestion! We'd love to have you join us! :-) They don't have to come from your yard/garden. But you do have to know what the plant is and include the info in/on the seed packets. If you see a plant being used by a butterfly or cat, but don't know what it is .... take a photo and post on the Plant ID forum or even here as many of us recognize the many plants used by our little winged friends!

late Nov. or early Dec. I think would be a good time. I will probably need that time to harvest clitoria seed as I was very late getting them planted and the Skippers are laying on it already

becky--

I was trying to think of where I could find some neat seeds at the garden centers but the racks are sold out in our zone. Maybe I will mail order some....

I will be on the look out for some seeds from the park and yarden, too, in August/September. But I don't think I have much that anyone needs. (you are all such avid butterfly gardeners you already have the ordinaries!)

OK. Count me in if you still have a spot. Sounds like fun.

Judy there are plenty of newbies coming in here everyday. I am sure someone will need the seed you have. Don't let that stop you!!! Wait to see if you can find seed on clearence before you buy. Probably by the end of September website will have them on sale and e-bay sellers do too.

Judy - I always need annual seeds. Many are great nectar plants. I bet you can find seeds for those around town. And Donna is right .... many places put theirs on sale in the Fall. Glad you are opting to join us! :-) I might just add some commercial seed to the mix as well. :-) And herbs often need to be replanted every year. Dill, parsley, rue, etc. are all host plants. I wish my wild lime and hercules club would put out seeds so I could share some of those. Some year I am sure they will. If you want certain host plants, let me know and I could always throw extras in so there is enough for you. :-) I am easy and will enjoy anything! :-)

Ok Becky, everyone.. I'm in.. Both RR. I've been collecting seeds too. November will be great.

Hi Judy, Another way to get a few great, and even rare seeds is look for DGers who have the tag line, 'will send seeds for SASBE." You can take some out for yourself and RR with the rest. Taking up on these offere is a good thing. The person offers because they want to see all the seeds get used.
