CLOSED: Duskywing help please

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Could someone help me identify this duskywing please? He was pretty dark, the same size as a pearl crescent in the garden with him, fluttering around some small star zinnias.

I'm thinking he's a Juvenal's Duskywing, but don't know for sure.

I found this site with some good, comparative photos ... although it's Massachusetts and I'm in NC

Wow, that site let's you compare side-by-side with other species, pretty cool.

It looks right to me, especially considering some of that genus is not supposed to be identifiable by appearance. Hopefully you'll get some more opinions.

Neat!

I've got the same skipper here...I *think*....and I've about come to the same conclusion. I'm still not 100% convinced, so haven't entered it in BF. The larger spots on the upper wingtips sure make a convincing argument, but I'm no skipper expert by any means.

Yes, I'm not convinced either. I am trying to explore distribution along with times of year, but some of the websites are slightly different. These duskywings are tough!!

Amen to that Linda! These silly Skippers are nuts!

FYI ... I've landed on a Horace's Duskywing.

I have a new field guide that's very helpful, "Butterflies of the Carolinas" by Jaret Davis It includes time of year for active flight, good location maps, and detailed diagrams as well as verbiage to ID by.
