Brenda, what a beautiful plant!! Congratulations - are your days getting cold yet? Our nights are pretty chilly already - temps down into the 40's, and I can feel the winter in the air!! Yikes. Our trees aren't red yet, but I can see it coming.

It really helps our bitter winter days to have a wonderful virtual jungle inside! Makes it so much easier when we actually have to step outside into the -30's plus wind chill....

Waaaah!

Brenda...........hello and am so happy you are growing hoyas , too...................i am trying........

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Oh Sara don't remind me of those breath taking steps into the bitter cold, not yet anyway!!! LOL The aspens are all turning and some have dropped a few leaves and we have plenty of red bushes already. It froze for the first time this season just this past Friday night! What elevation are you at there?

The beginning of my Hoya obsession (along with the gessies) were sanity saving for me last winter and now with the addition of a few more of them all :))) I'm actually looking forward to the winter and the slower pace and getting to try my had at more propagating etc.

My son in law recently told me that my house must have the best oxygen supply in the whole county as it is so stuffed full of green! There's room for more still, to my mind anyway! LOL Here is another of my new ones....H Blashernazii and it came in bud! I would so love to see this bloom!!

Hi Gail!! So which hoyas have you started with? I've seen some of the pictures from your friend with the nursery and the hoyas, they look like great plants!

I still don't have them potted up...........well.............I will show you sometime this week.......I am going to Carol's site and find out what soil, etc.........to use............i can hardly wait to show you when I get them all potted up.................
I love your new one..........that is a new name for me.............i am having trouble with all the names.........but I will learn..............
Snow and I are laughing so hard tonight.............i have her a basket (5 years old) of the darker pink one...........Pink Silver is the name I think......................it is so heavy and big..........but I am determined to get it to her..................it may have to regular mail as the plant was not expensive.........bought right here in Taft.............but the mailing is silly................
I will post for you all this week............thanks for asking...........

Brenda, we are at 3300 feet, with a population of 57000. The problem though it the wind - it just blows through your bones!! I grew up in Missoula, and it is considered the banana belt of MT, so I am not used to the BITTER cold. I grew up with snow and cold, but not like this.

Snifff. My daughter and I have the change of weather colds, so I know it is coming. You are getting it sooner, as it hasn't actually frozen here though.

Sara and Brenda,
I am sort of the opposite of you - I just moved to California where it should remain mostly sunny during the winter. Since I come from Eugene, Oregon, where even the summers were cloudy, it'll be interesting to see if my plants continue to grow during the winter. I am assuming that both of yours continue to put on new growth since you would have so much reflective light from the snow - is this true? Brenda, I hope that blashernazii blooms - it is an incredible looking little bloom!!

You are so right, the shipping is ridiculous any more, but then again for a beautiful, big, well established hoya plant!!........we all have our addictions, as was brought out early on in this thread! :))))

You'll never guess.... but this new one of mine blooms ... yellow!! LOL I sure hope it survives the shock of moving from HI to Idaho. I don't know if I would, but I hope H Blashernazii does :))))

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Sheeesh Ann, if you can't say anything nice.....HA! I don't even want to think of you sitting there in warm, sunny California - waaaa. :)

You are right though, I do tend to have fairly steady growth all year long, and when the barometer changes because of high pressure storms coming in, watch out!! I will get crazy fast growth, even without the light.

Yes, that blashernazii is pretty incredible isn't it? I will be sending positive blooming thoughts your way!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Ann the very few hoyas that I had last winter seemed to just love the reflective sunlight that your mentioning ...... as did the Streptocarpus and African Violets I also enjoy. I'm hoping for a repeat performance this winter now that I have added several more hoyas to the group!!

I was born and raised in the Sierra Nevadas in CA...have you traveled that way....Angels Camp... Murphys....Arnold?

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Sara you have made my evening!! I thought I noticed steady growth with my new small hoyas (except for cv iris marie who hated the cold!) last winter and now your saying it's possible despite the cold and snow! There ought to be some benefit to living at 5200 feet with snow on the ground nearly a full 6 months out of the year! LOL

cv Iris Marie really stepped up this summer though....... she was just a tiny little thing when I bought her from Robs this past Feb. and she lost a good half of her leaves trying to take an Idaho winter but she recovered nicely! I'll try and keep her warmer this winter!

I hate it for you guys who are getting cold/frost already. Winter doesnt usually start until december for us but last year we got frost in october and I see already that a lot of trees are dropping leaves and we are having some cooler days so it worries me!!!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda.................what a gorgeous plant.................i didn't even know that Rob carried hoyas................good to know.............

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

dmichael it's an even 30 degrees here this morning and I appreciate your feeling for Sara and I over here in the mountains :))))

My DIL went to college in NC and when we came for her graduation in May a few years back I thought the humidity would do me in! I know plants would love it but I don't know about me?? Do you have that same type of humidity??

~Brenda

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Here it went down to 84 last night...supposed to be 104 this afternoon...
I am so worried about the round robin box getting here in this heat.
I had asked to be put at the end so the weather would have a chance to cool down a little, but I guess that got missed and I am getting it very soon....
I envy you guys your cooler weather!
Sharon in hot, hot Phoenix...

Brenda, the temps for most of July and August were in the mid to high 90'S with humidity anywhere between 75-90%. I go to work at 5:30 am and we had several mornings that were 85F and 80% humidity at that time of morning!

dmichael

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Mercy, dmichael! I'll keep my snow on the ground 6 months out of the year and my below zero days! I can always put another layer on when I go out but when I'm hot and it's humid to boot theres nothing you can do about it! LOL It's funny that we all generally get acclimated to where ever we are but I'll choose that kind of heat and humidity for vacation time!

Sharon I hope it cools down for you and especially for that round robin box! :)))))

Well, I had a fabulously successful shopping day!! While I totally need to buy new clothes for work, and long pants for cold days right around the corner, I instead found two awesome towel stands that will work perfectly for - you guessed it, HOYAS! HA!

Here is the stand, I bought two though, I have a thing for pairs...I like balance, and symmetry waaaay too much. I have also been known to buy a dozen of the same pots, so that I can have them all the same in one room, and then color coordinate off of that.

Here is a better picture I think. Maybe not the best, but I will of course have to post one with all the plants in place.

Ok, last one, I promise. I realize I can be a bit redundant, but am seriously lacking in proper enthusiasm from those who live with me...

Really neat, Sara!! Your hoyas look wonderful on it - pants and new work cloths always come in second with me, too!! Nice purchase!

"me thinks" you need a new thread..................I have a very fast computer and it took forever to get to the last post............................I have heard Dave say many times that it really is unfair to people with dial up..........................becomes rather a goal to see how long we can make the threads............not a really inviting goal to some with dial up................

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

gessiegail ... I don't believe that this thread was made this long out of maliciousness nor in the interest of seeing how long we could make the thread. Instead it has been a "catchall" for showing off our newly-obtained plants, pots, trellises, and stands - since the subject matter does not necessarily "fit" in other threads.

I will be more than happy to take the initiative and start a new continuation thread. Anyone can start a new thread, so in the future, when these threads get too long and start to become a pain to load-up, just start a new one.

:-)

I don't know how............i always get my friends on the AV forum to do part 2 of the same thread.............sorry (LOL)

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

I just got really into hoyas this year. I've learned so much from yall here at the hoya forum. The ladies on the Mid-South Forum had asked me for photos of my top patio. After posting them and looking at the pictures I just realized how many new hoyas I actually have.

I thought maybe since yall had caused this with all your pretty pictures, yall would enjoy my addiction. LOL!!!!

Jeri, I loved seeing how you grow all of your plants!! Are you able to grow them outside all year? I would love to be able to set up a patio area like you have been able to do. It looks like you have some really awesome windows for indoor growing too.

Thank you for adding your pictures to the thread. I still enjoy looking at what everyone is doing with their plants!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Jeri..........I loved your photos and your answer to my dmail.................glad you are having so much fun..................

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

I'm glad you enjoyed it. No I'm starting to panic now at the thought of moving everything. Before we went to Hawaii I ordered a Harbor Freight GH and it's set under the carport until now. My 16 yr old grandson and I started to put it together last week. It is a joke!!! My hat is off to anyone that achived completion of that task. We had a carpenter come talk to my DH to night about converting it to wood. LOL!!! Do you think all of that is gonna fit into a 10'X12'?

Jeri

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have never heard of anyone knowing how to put together a greenhouse............that is what carpenters are for (LOL) Having been single for the last 35 years.........i can only learn to do so many things and then I call for help!!!!!!!!!

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Chris and I were making headway, after putting all the wall studs and braces, Jim said it was out of square and adjusted the frame at which time the bottoms of the wall studs came loose and I quit!!

Next scene. In come the carpenters.

Jeri

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Jeri,

There are a lot of threads on the Greenhouse forum here dealing with all the troubles of putting the Harbor Freight Greenhouse together. There are tons of helpful hints. There are also multiple threads on GardenWeb that are supposed to be very helpful. The instructions with that kit are totally inadequate and there are many suggestions to make this greenhouse much more stable. Before I went any further with it, I would look into these threads, either for you, or what ever carpenter you decide to use to put it together.

Doug

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Doug!!! I have already printed everything I could find on them. The metal just isn't strong enough!!! Instead we're substituting wood and then gonna cover the poly-carbon panels. After I bought it I found out what a disaster I was getting myself into but it was too late.

I really wish I could enclose my top patio but DH says it's not strong enough. That way I wouldn't have to move 100s of plants. Oh, well!!! He told he would buy me more next spring if I'd just let them die. I may take him up on the new plants in the spring but I'm gonna save these too!!! LOL!!!

We only have about 5 really cold days for winter but it's enough to kill everything!!

Jeri
