I'll post two pictures because his back is bright yellow but his bottom side is reddish with a black and yellow design. I looked at the orb weavers, but the one in my garden has a different coloration than the ones in bugfiles.

This is his back side or top side. I couldn't believe how bright the yellow coloration is. He's legs are peach colored with black rings.

Hi cordeledawg There's some variation within the species Argiope aurantia but that's your spider - here are a couple pretty close to yours:

Mike, is he an orb weaver? I've got to de-weed the garden bed his in. Will he bite me? Does he web with friends??? Should I get rid of him? He's got beautiful colors. Is that telling me he's deadly?

I just realized that typing "orb weaver" in the common name spot isn't the same as typing the orb weaver's Family name, Araneidae, which is what I guessed you had done

No problems with this spider, I never heard of them bothering anything - people look forward to seeing them, I think. They eat insects!

edit: and it's definitely a female

I googled Argiope aurantia and answered my own question. But can he catch my hummingbirds? Yek

LOL we cross posted. I'll leave her alone and try to work that bed as best I can. The information says her mate would build a web next to her. I haven't seen another one. I just don't want her eating my Monarch cats! The milkweed plants are directly behind her. She's right in the middle of Iris and glads. with milkweed behind those. Hopefully she doesn't hunt off of her web. If that's the case, she and I will get along just fine.
