Who Has the Bigest EE so Far This Year?

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Noell-mine seems to be putting alot more energy into growing then pupping since there is no sign of any, but I think when they are kept in a container then they pup more. I am trying to get another one to keep in a container over the winter and see if it will send out some pups for me-there is no way that I am digging that monster out of the ground! lol I sure hope its hardy here-this is in a pretty protected spot.

Tiger I have heard that some Colocasia Gigantea are hardy I think to zone 6, but I very will may be wrong. But not for sure if the Colocasia Gigantea, and the Thai Giant are the same or not. But I would really mulch the heck out of it and pray. I know last year I had a Wal Mart EE bulb that I had planted in the back yard, north side of house, no protection, not even mulched, and it came back this year. I couldn't beleive it. We had a fairly hard winter this past year.

well a bit late in the discussion here but I took a pic yesterday of mine growing. The hybrid seeds of this are starting to grow hopefully we will have some new Giant forms in the future.

Brian so is the Colocasia Gigantea that I received from you a different type?

Paul keep on bragging. It must be nice not to have to worry about winter.

Their are two forms of Colocasia Gigantea. They both came out of Thailand. The first form which is hardy here if mulched does not get as large as the Giant Thailand strain. Their are a few other major and minor differences. The hardy form and more common form produces pups and suckers easily. It also produces odd growths under the leaves and rarely flowers. The Thailand giant flowers more freely and rarely produces sucker plants. I grow both forms but unless it says giant thailand form it would be the other form which gets around 5 to 6 feet tall with leaves a small 3 to 4 feet.

WOW! Nice, Brian! I still have my Giant in a pot..... (will be in the ground next spring) it did bloom last year and this year and also has produced a pup, growing right along side the mother .... Should I break it away to grow on it's own? Leave it go till next Spring? This is my $50 plant (1st one I killed) so the pup is my consolation... lol

tigerlily, just for informational purposes , how big is your biggest non-giant strain leaf? I measured mine yesterday and the largest were 29-31 inches, not nearly as impressive as these FL folks, but I feel like mine were bigger last year...too much drought this year

I know the more water I give mine the more pups I get!

I have had at least 50 pups so far this year!

I'm about to dig more for some other DGers!

Tropic-I don't know how large any of them are-but I am sure that I won't be winning any awards with them! lol this drought is killer. Some of the them are probably as large or larger than 31", but probably not by much. I will try to remember to look when it cools down...another 100 degree day today :(

Noel-alot of mine are pupping like crazy too-even without the water-esp the Royal Hilos and the red stemmed-I think it is just part of their genetic makeup. Its the Thai Giant that I would like to see pup! lol
