Is this a winged carpenter ant or something else?

Linda, it looks very much like a Carpenter Ant, a Camponotus species: http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/entomology/factsheets/carpants.html
It could very easily be the Black Carpenter Ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus): http://bugguide.net/node/view/543/bgpage
