antique MG ?

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I have tons of MG starting around the back yard (1910 home). No blooms yet but I wonder if theres somewhere to find info on rare, older MG. I would love to find a rare country MG. Suggestions?

Hi Kathy,

This information will certainly be in Ron's memorybank from his many studies *-*

What fun it will be to see these blooms.

I"m new to the MG threads - old to DG - 2003. I'll look for Ron on the thread.

Oh, Kathy will you be able to post pics? I'd love to see them and your 1910 home. How cool! Ron will probably find you! He's the MG expert and very helpful guy, well I think so. Do you see buds, yet?

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

No buds, these are babies. I searched for Ron and dmailed him about it. We moved there in August and were building a garage and with all the dirt being moved around it ended up with tons of MG babies popping up. They are mostly 3 inches tall now since they were unearthed I guess. I need to move them - there are hundreds.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

here is a copy of the dmail I sent Ron

Ron,
Someone suggested I contact you about the many MG sprouting in my yard. We purchased a 1910 Victorian home last August. The yard was bare- 2 new trees, 1 rose of sharon, 1 pussywillow tree.

As my husband was grading an area to build our new garage I started seeing thousands of MG babies popping up. Is there some way to identify older MGs? I have no MGs growing in that part of the yard. I planted seeds this year for the first time and know very little about them. These babies are from moved soils that have now reached the top. Any chance there may be some antique plants there?

I don't think they last long unless I dig and move them out of the driveway area. I would like to see what happens and what blooms I may find.

Do you have any thoughts about this ? Is it likely the seeds would be rare?or at least vintage?

If you can do this relatively quick, pot some up into pots and let them grow there, that way you can keep them separate from the others. It will be neat to see what blooms, you never know.

I agree, it would be wonderful to have a surprise from the old earth. Oddly, in this small town that I grew up in, my x-mother-in-law lives 2 doors away from Miss P - who was born in my current bedroom!! Her daddy built this house. She is a major pack-rat, so they say, and won't allow anyone in her current house. I know there's pictures of the old house and many treasures to be found that have connections here - if only she were a trusting person who would let me copy her photos......

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Go Kathy, pot em up! I grow most of mine in pots. I wish I'd never planted some in the ground as I'm always pulling them, I don't mind too much, I could just round em up. I let a couple kinds come back volunteer and climb the lattice on my deck. It will be so fun to see what you have! Could you speak with Miss P (on her stoop or front porch, of course) about your MG's, maybe she's a flower/plant person, too? That would be so neat to get copies, maybe she would let you at least look at them.... of course, she may not know where they are.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I'll pot them up this evening. I'm excited.

Miss P isn't a gardener - poor health but don't think she was ever a gardener.

I'll keep you guys posted. Still no comment from Ron - I guess I sent the note to the correct Ron.

shihtzumom-Kathy - It's nice that you have some volunteers coming up but the likihood that they are actually very old Ipomoea seeds is extremely remote...

Ipomoea seeds would not remain viable for long after being buried in dirt for a very long time...

Calystegia sepium
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2890/
and
Convolvulus arvensis
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/32093/
(both bindweeds) will remain viable for up to 50 years...

Since you did loosen up the soil it is likely that an Ipomoea that commonly volunterrs like Ipomoea hederacea
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/147733/
has sprouted on the property...

Photos of the young plants showing the shape of the leaves would assist in an ID...

Talk to you...

I planted the seeds for this one and the pink. The white above grew on it's own in the front yard. The small MG are in the back yard.

Nice home! :-) Lots of trellis to grow MGs! Such a perfect set-up for vines! How old is the house?

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

1910

Lovely! Any ghosts? LOL!

SO nice, Kathy. It looks very well kept. I'm always sad when I see a really cool old house getting run down. Just gorgeous! -B

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks! The house is strong and sturdy, far more than the 1945 house we moved from. No ghost. Darn it. I picture small children playing in the parlor, or on the porch floor. The woodwork is perfect and wonderfully built. Perfect condition floors too.

Beautiful older home, shihtzumom. : )
They don't make them like that anymore. Love the porch.

Kathy,

HOW LOVELY!
Thanks so much for sharing your photos of your beautiful home.
Like Becky says, you have the perfect set up for your Morning Glories with all of your lattice. They do very well climbing lattice too.

Thanks again for sharing.

Emma
