Yikes! I planted one of these last year I bought at a plant sale... Guess I will have to go pull it up this spring (maybe pot up one or two and keep them there). Hope it hasn't spread too much yet!
****anemone invasion**** HELP!
Zarabeth - did you plant it where its gonna be really happy? I've kept the
Japanese anemone w/o any issue where its not able to jump into open dirt.
There are certainly worse thugs (at least around here).

Maybe you could call the County Extension Agent there to see
if this perennial is a problem in your area. If it were me, I'd give
it a try and risk having to pull seedlings from that bed. It looks
like a manageable area to keep an eye on.

Tammy, my experience with Anemone blanda (from bulbs) is much like yours. Very well behaved and I wish it would be a little more robust! I wonder what I'm doing wrong. http://www.johnscheepers.com/catview.cgi?_fn=Product&_category=Best:Anemone
Same thing with my Anemone sylvestris. I think I have five kinds of Japanese anemones and I can't get any of them to grow well...I got them from trades and a few from Bluestone...

Wish I had more!! Oh, dear! t.
Oh NO! I had no idea these guys were invasive, and planted them all over the place last Fall (15 bulbs in the bag). Oops, lol. It looks like there are several different types of anemone discussed in this thread, and I’m honestly not sure what I’ve got. They were an impulse buy at Home Depot, and I’m pretty sure the label just called them “white anemone.” I threw out the tag long ago. They’ve just started blooming. Does anyone know if this is one of the invasive ones…should I rip em out now?
Even if they are one of the invasive ones, we have a very different climate here than people in much of the country, so they may not be invasive here. I checked the list on www.cal-ipc.org and there are no anemone species listed as being invasive in the state. That doesn't mean it won't spread aggressively in your garden if the area is well watered, but out in the wild without summer rain it probably doesn't survive very well which would prevent it from being considered invasive.
Looks to me as if you have European Windflower not the NA native windflower you probably thought you were buying. I don't know that you would want to rip the species of anemone out that you ended up with but you'd probably want to dead head them because the European windflowers can get rambunctious too. The plant isn't formally identified as being invasive yet. Dig through your garbage and see if Anemone sylvestris 'Snowdrop' appears on your bag.
Thank you so much for the quick and knowledgeable replies ecrane3 and equilibrium! I really appreciate your help. I am new to DG and just happened to stumble upon this thread while poking around, and wow I am so glad I did. This is the first time I’ve had actual “ground” to plant in since I was a child, and it certainly is a learning experience. We have a very small yard, and the anemones are planted in good soil which will get regular watering, so it sounds like they could get out of hand quickly. I think I will save a few plants in pots that I can pay careful attention to…but for now I’m off to murder some anemones ;-)
Well, don't hurry too quickly~ The anemones that are invasive to me are more like these guys. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/72590/ I haven't had any problems with the pretty ones you have shown in your picture.... I can't say for sure, but I think you're okay with those.
May you enjoy DG to its fullest! There are many neat folk here who are willing to help out with nearly anything. Good luck.
Sanna
Thanks for the additional info and the welcome Sanna. I did hurry and murder quickly, but left a couple in the ground and I’ll just watch and see what happens. I’m glad to hear you’ve had a good experience with these guys. I really do like them, so hopefully I can keep them under control.
