Okay, why aren't they blooming??

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

My MGs were transplanted into their final container mid-June. I have vines, no buds. I used a seedling fertilizer when they were small, and half-strength Blossom Booster about three weeks ago. Do you think I can expect blooms sometime soon? Usually my MGs bloom by now. What happened??

Oops! Wrong photo. That's from awhile back.

Patience my child. I never fertilize, have you? Before this year? Sometimes, the fertilizer helps the foliage grow and forgets about the blooming.... I think they will bloom eventually.

Looks like they are in partial shade, which can delay (but not stop) the eventual blooming. Not all of mine have bloomed yet either!

Mine are just crawling, at a snail's pace!!!!! They are barely 2 feet high...they better hurry up, they're running out of summer...if they don't bloom by the end of August I'm gonna have to cover them with blankets every night to keep the frost off them.....

I have them where they get full sun from about 11 am on.....

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

The earliest blooming MG I have is Red Star. They come back volunteer every year and although the plant may be only 8 inches high, they already start blooming and bloom like crazy all summer, even in part shade. It's kind of funny to look down and see the bloom before I get the trellis up. Sometimes covers the vine and looks like it just popped up out of the dirt.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ooh, I thought it was just me. Lots of vines but only a few MG's at a time. And mostly those darn Crimson Ramblers, which is not even a variety I had seed for! LOL. And now the foliage wilts around 11 AM. It is really hot here (85F) by then. Foliage seems to perk back up once they're in the shade by 2:30 pm or so. I thought MGs like the heat...

Good luck with yours, Rev.

Glad I'm not the only one! I haven't fertilized before this year. But somebody suggested Blossom Booster (or whatever it is), so I put some on hoping it would help. The part shade has never bothered my MGs before. I don't get as many blooms as if they were in full sun, but I get enough to keep me happy. Threegardeners, wow! When do you normally put them in the ground??

As soon as I posted I went out and scoured the vines for buds, and I found one! It was on my Heavenly Blue, which I've never grown before. I'm so excited!

Here's a pic from 2005, just enough flowers to be worth growing every year. LOL

We had our last frost here June 5th......they were just sprouting then......We get really cool nights too, usually low 60's, sometimes cooler, I've had to drag my hibiscus and plumerias back inside countless times this summer.............I wonder if that's what's holding them up maybe??

Revclaus, You didn't register on the thread that Bindweed started for registering out longitude and latitude. Please do, this would help some of us help others, and please include your altitude, if you can find it.

Rev, your picture, without any description, looks to me like you have planted them on the north side of the house. If this is true, it could be for many normal and understandable reasons. The street that fronts your home, may be to the north of your home.

Many of us have this problem. I live on the North side of a 900' mountain, in a valley with streams, at about 600 elevation. Most of my property is the best sledding hill in the area. It is where the snow lasts the longest when we get a good one. This may be good for sledding in the winter, but in the summer it really shortens the growing season, being shaded on the north side. Whether it is a 5000 square foot lot, or it is 20 acres on the north side of a mountain or high hill, It all boils down to how many hours of sunlight plants have access to in their growing season.

The number of direct sunlight access hours in a day is extremely important to the plant we want to bloom for us. If a plant needs 12+ hours of sunlight to set buds, we just can't expect miracles from it if we plant it in a place where it will never get more than 4 hours of direct sunlight. Please all of you that read this go and put in your co-ordinates and your elevation on the thread that Beth Started for this.
This is a very important kind of information if people are going to understand plants and how they do what they do. I will make another blog talking about elevation vs zone vs lattitude later. Frank

Okay Frank, I did it. I face northeast, but get several hours sun in the morning and in late afternoon.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I'm gonna have a morning glory bloom in the morning! I knew all it would take was to broadcast to the world that they weren't blooming. It's blooming just to spite me! LOL I have no idea which one it will be.

All right!!! I keep thinking I'm seeing buds on mine...but they turn into leaves.....

Mesilla Park, NM

Yes, and when they start, they won't stop, they come in flushes.. lol.. dont' forget to use a little of the bloom booster for more flowers. This is the first year I use it and WHAT a Difference.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I just fertilized with it today. This should be the start, then. There are three more buds, not quite as far along, on the same vine. I think I've got about 8 varieties planted, so it'll be fun to see them all.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

YAY! Guess it showed you, huh? That's funny. It's so fun to watch blooms emerge, especially when you don't know what you're getting. Hope you post a few pics, I'd love to see. I just have volunteers this year, I have a couple new seeds I wanted to try, but didn't get them in the dirt this spring. I've got red star, grandpa otts, milky way and the Japanese white/purple streaks and sunspots (something sun anyway, suffer crs) it's small and orange and it just didn't "jingle" my bell, but I keep watering it. Happy to see your buds, revclaus!

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Okay, here it is. Unfortunately it's on my balcony railing and it's a little difficult to get a picture from the front. LOL So I had to turn the flower. Looks like Heavenly Blue, but since I've never grown them before I wouldn't know for sure. I'm thrilled! And I see a lot more buds for tomorrow!

Revclaus - the elogated sepals on your flowerbud as shown here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3775523
identify the plant as an Ipomoea nil...

Looks like something that comes out of the Early Call mix...

Hope that helps...

Looks like Hatsu Arashi.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Here's the second bloom. Maybe easier to see the color. It's actually more purple, almost like a Grandpa Ott's but without the extra coloring and marking. Do you think it's Hatsu Arashi?

Hey Rev - pretty color no matter what he is!

Mine must have been paying attention to this thread. Most MG's at one time this morning. This is a shot of the other side of the trellis...

Gorgeous, and well grown, Joanne!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Nice Blooms Joanne. . .

Judith, Your MG does look like Hatsu Arashi to me.
These blooms will turn to a Dark Purple and will continue to change colors throughout the day.

I would attach a couple of my blooms this year for comparison, but I am at my son and DIL in Houston at the moment.

Revclaus- I've grown Hatsu Arashi and that's what it looks like to me! Very pretty!

Joanne - I wish mine looked like yours! That's beautiful! :-)
