I'm planning a late summer or fall trip to Sea Ranch--I was there 2 yrs ago in August and while it was wonderful and relaxing, it was foggy the whole time I was there (which I knew it would be, but I really needed the vacation!) So I was hoping to go back sometime when I had a better chance for it to be sunny. Anyone know if mid-September would give me a better chance, or do I need to wait until October? I realize you can never 100% guarantee there won't be fog, but I'm looking to improve my odds!
When is it not foggy at Sea Ranch?
I was there in January a couple of years ago and it was not foggy. In fact it was beautiful weather.

I knew in winter it probably wouldn't be foggy, but I don't really want to wait that long for this trip, plus I don't want to take too many chances on running into rain instead--I'd take fog over rain if I have to make a choice! That's why I was hoping September or October might be OK since rainy season won't have started yet.
It is hit and miss at the Ranch any time of year.
I lived up in this part of the woods for almost 7 years and can attest to its fickleness.
If you find it foggy down on the meadow or the beach all you have to do is go inland.
If you want to stay on the Ranch proper then head up Annapolis Road and you will find sun.
If you want to hang out on the Gualala River just drive inland along the River - first right hand turn as you enter the town of Gualala ,directly after you cross the bridge.
Or you can go hang out at the Gualala Park up on the ridge - Take Pacific Woods Road and loop on up to the top of the ridge.
It is always sunny up there.
Thanks! Guess I'll just have to pick a weekend that works schedule-wise, hope for the best, and spend some time inland if I want sunshine! The real point is to get away and relax for a few days and I did have fun last time I went even though it was foggy, but since I'll be paying extra to stay closer to the ocean, I was hoping to actually see it at some point!
As I remember the fog passes East over the coastal mountains as a reaction to the heat in the interior valley. The valley sucks the lingering, cooling fog off of the ocean afternoon and night. This natural occurrence is what makes grape growing for wine so desirable in Alexander Valley, Sonoma, Napa etc. The heat of the day in the valley sucks the fog in to cool the grapes at night ... otherwise they turn to raisins, such as what occurs in Martinez or Los Banos area south. As I remember... anyhoo.....
Fog is just part of the life at Sea Ranch.... I LOVE the fog. Any fog including the coastal mtn between Felton and north to SF/Mendocino.... Just beautiful. There once was a favorite artist of mine named Jolly who painted Fog. Loved her work.
I grew up in Fort Bragg. My wife's 1st trip there was in August. We were there for two weeks and only saw the sun once, when we took a trip inland. Winter has the best chance on no fog.
I was there in August a couple years ago and it was just like that, I saw the sun one morning for about an hour and then that was it! I was hoping if I went in the later part of fall but before rainy season starts that I'd have a chance for a little more sun. I'd take fog over rain though, and I need to plan ahead rather than just going on the spur of the moment so I really can't wait until winter.
There are several small pockets of areas called " The Banana Belt ", where due to the projection of the topographical land mass, the tree formations, and the wind corridors there are pocket areas along the coast that when there is fog ebbing along the coast they are clear.
When I lived in Gualala I had the good fortune of living both right on the ocean and up on the ridge.
I did not live in one of the 'banana belt pockets' when on the coast but I got a great education of where the banana belt pockets were located when I lived on the ridge.
If you drive up to the top of the ridge - about 3 to 5 miles up depending on the topo, you can look down upon the entire coastline and see where the fog creeps in over the meadows and beaches and where it floats out over the ocean.
It is usually in the same places all the time.
After surveying the fog ebb and flow from the ridge you can then drive back down to the meadows and beaches and find the 'banana belts' that are free of the fog.
It's only when the fog is extremely thick and heavy along the entire California coast that you can't find a fogless pocket.
Some of the pocket fogless areas are located right around the mouth of the Gualala River (on the Gualala side not the Sea Ranch side ) , a cove below St. Orres Inn, and up in Anchor Bay , on either side of the Anchor Bay Beach.
Much of the reason why The Sea Ranch is foggy when Gualala is not is due to the lack of trees down on the coastal shore that block and draw in and out the wind .
Most of the 10 miles on TSR is fairly tree less along the coast with the exception of a few pocket areas.
