DAILY BUTTERFLIES Page 10
Yes Deb, Thats a lovely Red Admiral!
Yea! I'm headed to the fridge to get the over ripe plums no one in my family will eat. I'll put it in the dish in the garden for this beauty.
I thought those were yellow butterflies? And, Hollyhock's a host for a certain butterfly too. I have a list somewhere. Is it the Clouded Skipper?
Great pictures, Sheila. I just love watching Swallowtails. Especially the Pipevine....I love the color of Blue, it has. : )

Y'all have been busy with your cameras and capturing some really nice butterfly shots! I'm enjoying them! I saw a Monarch, Queen, and a Zebra Swallowtail today. They all actually stopped in my yard to nectar. (No egg laying.) I can't get over how beautiful the Zebra is! It's been coming through my yard on a daily basis for at least 4 days now. :-) Keep those lovely photos coming!
Hi Lily!
It is a Hackberry Emperor, a very pretty butterfly! Nice shot!
Ah Sheila! What a great shot of the PVST! He is gorgeous!
:-)
3 of the 4 Monarchs that made their chrysalids 8 days ago have eclosed this morning! They have been hanging for a while. I set the container inside the hamper cage so theyw ould have more room to flap thier wings. I will try to get some good shots later. Only one has climbed out of the smaller box into the bigger area, and none seem anxious to leave. I will wait til later to release them.
Look who found the hummer nectar!! I have replaced and wasted so much of this stuff keeping it fresh. Finally one of them found it, and she is coming back more frequently now, every 5-10 min...all day long.
Lily, nice pic of the Red Admiral! I had one land on me, but it was on my leg so I managed to get a pic (see above). I wonder if they're people friendly?
As for my GF cat he's currently looking like this. I took this pic yesterday, but he really hasn't changed, except maybe that bubble at the end had solidified a little more.
How many leaves have that on it Mellie?
From here it doesn't look very good. I would be cutting the leaves with that on them off of the main plant, and putting them into containers. It could be some sort of preditor. Even frits don't lay that many eggs like that, and they wouldn't be white.
Has anyone else ever seen a Gulf Frit chrysalis with a blob of fluid on the bottom like the one Mellie posted 3 posts up^? Something about it doesn't look quite right.
Watch those really close Mel. If it does turn out to be something bad on either case, there will be more. The season is just beginning for you now, and as I did, you might have to see a few enemies at first. We can all benifit from learning whatever it is.
:-)
Only the one leaf is like that. I know zebra longwings lay eggs on passion vine, and I have seen them in the area, so I didn't know if that was a possibility. By the way, does anyone use those little mesh pop-up hampers for their butterflies? They were selling them at the butterfly festival at USF botanical gardens for about $10, but I just got an ad from Jo-Ann Fabrics that had them for $2.49. If they're a good option I think I'll pick up a few.
Melanie
Oh Chris, you lucky girl! She laid that egg under the leaf, is that right? I had a female Monarch yesterday. All she seemed to be concern with was nectaring.
Yes, it is underneath. I am going to look for more tomorrow, I watched her lay the eggs and I think some were on top, but I couldnt get a shot of her in action. She was always on the other side of the fence. I did watch her put a couple right at the base of the flowers, where the unopened buds are in a cluster. I need a magnifying glass tomorrow. :)
You all have some great pictures, keep em coming!!
The white eggs, don't look like anything I have seen. Put that pic out on bug files id and see if anyone knows before you have a bunch of bad critters eating your cats.
Chris, what plant is that? She is beautiful...
Mel, not sure about those white things. Are they tomato hornworm eggs? maybe deb or another butterfly expert will know ...
Elaine
Asclepias Curassavica...butterfly weed.
Grown from seed started indoors in Feb. Very easy.
I put them in a really bad spot though, gonna have to move them next year.
I have plenty of seeds if you want some.
chris
Chris, yes, I would love some seeds.. With all the flowers I have,, can't believe I don't have butterfly weed. Are you planning to go to the swap in south Georgia? If so,, just save me some seeds for then.
I think I saw a red admiral flying around today. He/she was flying very fast from flower to flower.
Elaine
I am hoping to be there, but I need the date to get closer to decide for sure.
I have plenty!!!
