I have a pine tree that is turning yellow from the inside out. After looking at the trunk it has holes all over it. I didn't know what to do so I took the water hose and blasted it which probably did nothing. Looks like some kind of hole borer got to it. Is there something I can do?

Will my pinetree survive?
What kind of pine are you dealing with? Now and then I loose a pine and know there are insects and disease that can take them out especially if they are stressed from the environment there growing in. Some grow well and as older trees they up and die. Never like to have one of my trees croak!! It takes time to replace and even more time for them to grow.....

I don't know the name of it but it has long pokey needles. I hope it doesn't "croak" as my wallet is already "croaking". I won't be able to replace it.

It seems that borers have moved in or maybe some disease is affecting your pine. Austrian Pines planted here grow then mature then often POW they die. Others like Eastern White Pines have been affected by particuliar insects that can take them out too. Seems nothing in the tree world is completely immune to everything. if so then lightning will strike it!!
Identify the problem in your area thru a forester ,local nursery, etc. then hopefully you can do something for the tree. Otherwise you will be grabbing at straws as to whats going on with it. Maybe it will be something simple you can do.

Thanks Cuckoo.
Can you post a pic?

Most likely a fungus called dothistroma.
Here is a link on it

I have seen decent results spraying it twice a year - for the rest of it's life.LOL
Thanks Al for the link. The tree is too big for me to try to spray unless I had a ladder truck.
Loren
Thanks for the pics! It's an Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra). Agree with Bigcityal on the likely cause of the needle loss.

Loren, You would have to hire a company to do it. Otherwise just put up with it as long as you can. Austrians come in pretty high on the do not plant list because of all of the insect and disease problems they have around here, yes I have seen some nice ones.
