I think my next project will be a pergola and of course I am thinking of using clematis to grow up over it since I love them so much! However can you suggest something that will grow quickly and that may eventually cover the roof or do such clematis exist? Any help would be appreciated. Would another vine be more appropriate for this?
Help with clematis on a pergola...
Dawn..what zone are you in?...Jeanne
Zone 4
Dawn..I hope someone will come along that is knowledgeable about growing clematis in your zone..I don't see why the "Atragenes" won't flourish for you there..they are hardy from zone 3 and up...

Click on frost hardiness and it will bring up most of what I copied here...
"Paul Fargas" (Vitalba group) can get to 7 meters tall pruning group 1's of course..skip any of the Integrifolias as they don't climb but scramble..I hope that link and a few I copied will "hopefully" work for you...where's Shirley..she's a big warmer than you but probably has some good suggestions....Jeanne

Oh goodness! Thanks for the help. I guess I really shouldn't get anything that would grow bigger than 4 m right? I don't want anything to take over my already small yard. I think I will look for something in the 4 metre range.
Dawn:
You might want to check out this website. It has lots of different Canadian Clematis that might meet your needs.
Clematis list from Humber Nurseries
https://www.gardencentre.com/plant_list.asp
Dawn I would try a Group A clematis which flowers on old wood so you dont take it down every year as you would a group C.
I grow them here in Calgary so you should be able to grow them in Sudbury.
I am growing them along a fence - have 2 mature ones and 2 new ones ( I had to remove 2 mature ones as they were mislabelled and wrong color )
Just be careful when you purchase - Clematis are so often mislabelled as to bloom color that I never buy one now unless it actually has flowers on it so I can be sure!
This is my clematis fence a couple of years ago. The growth is so thick on the south end now that probably next year I will prune it off after flowering .
And - unfortunately - that Humber Nursery list is not much help since not only do they not list which group but their descriptions are inaccurate - a picture of Rouge Cardinal with a description that says it is a deep blue. A description of Sweet Autumn says the botanical name is Helsingborg and that it is blue! Too bad!
Yeah I noticed that too fancyvan :(.
Thanks for pointing that out, Fancy. Their website definitely needs to be corrected and probably updated too. I was trying to find a Canadian website where you could order on-line. Do you have any suggestions as to other Canadian websites that carry Clematis?
Regardless of where your order or purchase a Clematis from, the best website to check for accurate information and pictures is at Clematis On The Web. http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/index.cfm
Clemtis on the Web is a great site for detailed information! I print out and keep their page for each clematis I have.
Garden Import usually has a couple of pages of clematis in their catalogue and on the website so that would be a good place to start. I cant think of anybody else that has a good selection at the moment.
Thanks so much, fancy. Garden Import http://www.gardenimport.com/ looks like a very nice website. Wish we could order from them, but our U.S. import regulations won't allow it. Darn! They carry Clematis, "Omoshiro" and several other ones that I haven't seen available in the U.S. yet. You'll just have to grow those beauties in your garden and then we'll drool over all your gorgeous pictures!
