Figs, up north.

I have figs down in Florida -- and they seem to thrive.

Here in New Jersey, I planted twin Celeste figs about ten feet apart, on the southern side of my home. (One is partially shaded by a shrub.) I got a few fruit last year. I decided against wrapping them (too lazy) but heavily layered insulation around the roots.

They survived -- here is a May 27 photo of the larger one after pruning it down to still-live growth. The smaller one looked about the same, but the pruning went lower.

This is the same tree, yesterday. You can see that the growth is abundant -- but there is but one figlet (about 1 inch in diameter) on the lowest branch. The upper branches do show specks of new figlets at each node along the stems, but nothing significant.

But back to the little runt -- this is what it is today. See the figlets along the main branch.

Can anyone compare notes with me -- so I can see what I am doing wrong?

Please.

The breba crop is produced on last year's wood. The variety 'Celeste' produces a light breba crop.

The main crop of figs is produced on new wood and ripens in the fall. So if you trees show good growth, your main crop will be more bountiful. You may want to protect your trees next winter. Larger fig trees are more winter hardy so if you can protect them until they are larger, you'll get a larger breba crop because more of last year's wood survives.

Thanks. It makes sense -- and the link is perfect. (I tagged it.)

And I'll wrap them this fall. Problem is -- I am away from mid-October to mid-May. I'll get someone to open them up next April. But I'll try.

Thanks, again.

Be well

I have been eating figs from my brown turkey for about a week. The other 2 trees are full of fruit but not ripe yet.

Thanks for the info about the 2 crops and for the web-site.

2 of the trees are in pots and set fruit the first year (just a few)

Fresh figs are my favorite fruit.

My larger one is finally showing figlets.

Yay!

And, nothing compares to a fresh fig, off the plant, in the morning.

I really enjoy gardening with edibles. Isn't it great to finally get fruit!

My friendly deer, squirrels, rabbits, moles and voles -- all agree.

The big one is growing like gang-busters. And figlets are beginning to show.

And the little one is pushing these few figs into ripeness.
