Here in New Jersey, I planted twin Celeste figs about ten feet apart, on the southern side of my home. (One is partially shaded by a shrub.) I got a few fruit last year. I decided against wrapping them (too lazy) but heavily layered insulation around the roots.

They survived -- here is a May 27 photo of the larger one after pruning it down to still-live growth. The smaller one looked about the same, but the pruning went lower.
