I looked up Monarch and I knew it wasn't but I wanted to make sure. Who is this? Thankyou, Andrea
CLOSED: what am I?
Looks like a Painted Lady..... Vanessa cardui
The most widely distributed butterfly in the world
Take a look (or ten) at this:
http://bugguide.net/node/view/71459
I think it looks more like the Vanessa virginiensis. It would be a lot easier to identify if you had a picture of the other side - or maybe you got a good look at it?
With obeisance to claypa, little doubt that your critter is Vanessa virginiensis...
the American Painted Lady
No obeisance necessary! I stumbled on that comparison page .... I wouldn't have checked it otherwise.
Good stumble claypa...looks like a useful source for butterfly ID
(I understand there are dozens of butterfly species!)
Mebbe hunnerds
Close enough to see the two large spots of the V. virginiensis instead of four smaller ones for V. cardui. eeyup.
Thanks! I built my house here a year and a half ago, and I'm really liking all of the nature and trying to learn about all that lives here. Now, I really get to "stop and smell the roses". It's nice.:-)
Hi guys,
Beautiful photo, mygypsyrose! I wanted to thank claypa for posting that wonderful link comparing the Painted Lady and American Painted Lady butterflies. Don't worry, OldNed, it seems many people get the two confused. I asked the same question in the butterfly and hummingbird forum and got both answers, hehe! :D
