Strep Seedlings Update

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Continuing on from here....

This morning I divided and potted the variegated strep seedlings into their own solo pots. It turns out more are variegated than I first thought. Nearly all are.

Here are some of the seedlings wick'd and placed in a plastic sweater box lined with matting.

Snowrose, that is extraordinary! You should be so proud of yourself. What a combination of colors with that deep ruby and the green and white. Have any of your other seedlings bloomed?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The variegation is different on each one. Some have more and some have less.

Highly variegated...

Thanks, Gloriag. These are my first successful attempt from seed. Looking forward to them maturing and being surprised at what the blossom colors may be.

Snowrose - that is awesome, what nice, healthy babies. Hope you get some pretty blooms, can't wait to see them.

Amazing! That is one BEAUTIFUL Strep ..... I adore that variegation in the leaves! Babies are pretty Awesome too! And, all those babies are from seeds??

Strep's are just Amazing and Beautiful plants .... I gotta get better at growing them!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This is simply a BIG feat............I read last night that the reason variegated streps are hard to come by is because there is only a 15% chance of variegation continuing by seeds............amazing lady you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Really, really beautiful mother plant and now all those beautiful babies coming along, and you did it all yourself with your own home raised seeds, Wow!!

And double wow after reading what Gail just posted about the 15 percent likely hood of the variegation continuing from seeds!! Or do you think you only kept 15% of the babies you actually grew??? That would be interesting....

I am so mad at myself that I have no memory.............I had forgotten that you started your seeds in Spaghnum choppped moss....................now I may have lost your seeds you sent to me..............I used the medium that you said you grew the seedlings in.................bummer!!!!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Absolutely stunning picture, really made my day.

Those babies look very healthy and happy.
Good growing lady!

Yes, Snowrose is too modest...................don't let her kid you..................she can grow anything................

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Awesome! Look at all those pretty babies. Great growing.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone for your very kind comments. I really don't know very much about strep genetics but do feel fortunate with this batch of seedlings. This whole experience has been most rewarding to me.

As far as seed sowing medium goes, don't fret Gail. What you did may be as good or better actually. Let us know how it goes for you. That batch of seed sent to a few DG'ers came from this plant. A large sturdy grower you see in a 6" standard pot starting to bloom so well even after producing many seedpods recently harvested. The blossom stems are strong and branched producing an average of 5-6 large blossoms per stem. I like the coral color undertones not completely evident in the photo. A tough cookie I would say.

I just have to remind myself that the gesneriads only entered my life this year.............sometimes I need to learn the hard way..................then i won't forget.............
I certainly can't show you successes with streps, but check out this leaf that came from one of you all above!!!!
All these leaves that I started are just now producing babies for the first time in my life!!!!!!.........plantlets everywhere.........this one is not ready but the colors are too wonderful...........both in a standard and one in a trailer leaf. I think my watching in admiration each day is slowing them down!!!!!!!!!!!!

**************don't laugh at my thumb nail.........I cut the nail with a razor........but not my thumb!!!!!!!!

These babies will be 'Ramblin Amethyst'

Rule number 1...........when you can't contribute to the subject at hand...........just change the subject (LOL)

Take your wonderful thread back from me...............I love streps!!!!!!!!

Yes! Your plantlets are beautiful. Love that pretty variegation.

(Zone 1)

Snow: I have a question: I got these leaves of 'Ramblin Spots' and 'Glitter Fountain' from you back in our trade in April. Here's a pic of the little babies coming up. It seems real crowded in these little cups so I'm wondering if it's time to pot them up to a little larger pot or if they should stay in the little solo cups awhile longer? I'm so afraid of disturbing them.

Should have included a more close up pic ... here they are:

Hee hee ... Brenda, I didn't have anything to do with the color or variegation! I guess that's what mama looks like!

(Zone 1)

Just went to the AVSA website ... Sure hope my Lil' Ramblin Spots looks this good when he grows up: http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/RamblinSpotsLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/RamblinSpotsLrg.jpg%23

..... And, Glitter Fountain:

I don't know where SnowRose is...............but I was told to let the leaves on a standard get as big as a nickel before moving in any way...........on the small ones, i was told to just let them overflow the pot before separating.............on the variegated ones i was told keep them with the mother leaf as long as possible................then when I did plant up my first babies last week, I scooped out gently with a spoon.............then gently started separating all the babies in a row...........when I put them into the smallest pots I have (one 1/2 ") I used the wicking mix but left lots of room around the baby plantlet to put in some of whatever they were rooted in...........to give them something familiar ................i still have mine under plastic..........just opened yesterday..........to give each one a fighting chance at life...........

maybe Snowrose will come around and help..........this is as new to me as you...........I won't start separating this until there is no room in the pot and a little longer then.......

My 'Rambling Spots' is not forming new crowns.........so I need to cut her crown off and reroot it........and then the suckers will start forming quickly and give new crowns.........hopefully.......

Lin, yours are fine for now. Leave them for a while. Very nice. Your mother leaves still look good so if you want later, you can cut them off and try reusing them again.

Ramblin' Spots...

Yes, gessiegail. Try that to make your plant fill out multicrowned....

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love that 'Glitter Fountain'......................here we go googling again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

****made a big mistake..............thank goodness I only killed a few mother leaves...........tried to feed them seaweed kelp...............it was too strong................never again the same mistake.........

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

This is 'Ramblin' Amethyst' for you, gessiegail, so you can see what to expect when your plants grow up. The blossoms are plain but the foliage is great.

One thing I found works well when growing trailers is to not allow them to bloom until you have a nice full plant multicrowned plant grown out. I keep them disbudded. The plant first, the flowers later.

Thumbnail by Snowrose
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just learned something new..............need to get after every one of mine that is blooming............thanks so much.......i never would have known this..........maybe that is why they have trouble forming multiple crowns........

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Oh my goodness Snowrose that Ramblin' Amethyst is some thing else :0))) I didn't even know leaves came with that beautiful of coloring. I've some with some pink but nothing like that!

I have Ramblin' Spots and I might be forced to try the disbudding thing, I'm such a baby at taking flowers off, I know it means I'm a newbie...LOL

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OK............now I have taken all the blooms off of each one. That Dresden Doll i bought at the av sale must have had several crowns planted in one pot............so i thought that is what they did.................

Here is one called 'Chantaspring' i got from Lyndon Lyons..........the only plant which was totally ok when it arrived. (Lyndon Lyons is being real nice about the other ones). How do they achieve this look when growing theirs?
Also, how long do I leave it in this size container?
One more question...........how do you know when it is time to move up to another pot size on any trailer?

****edited to say Hi bmedel...........we will have to wait until morning for answers........i wish Snowrose would hold a clinic somewhere to teach us everything she knows!!! (LOL))

Oh My!!! What a beauty! And your little guy so stacked with leaves, that is really something :0))

The semi min yellow blooming violet you sent me in my Bingo box has a beautiful little bloom on it with more coming!!! I can't get the pictures to show anything but white though. Maybe if i take it outside in natural sunlight I can get the yellow blush to show up. I love it!!

Thanks Snow! I will leave these babies alone for awhile then. Oh, and I didn't even think of using the Mom leaves again to try and make a second set of babies. How long should I leave the mom leaves on these current babies before I can remove it to try again?

Oh, 'Ramblin Amethyst' is so pretty! I've never seen leaves like that! The colors in that variegation are outstanding!

I am so appreciative of all this great help I get from this forum!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Me, too, Lin!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is like having a tutor every day (LOL)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lin, wait till you think the plantlets will do well on their own. I don't know how fast they are growing....2-3 weeks maybe? You'll see.

Thanks for the compliments on Ramblin Amethyst. Best color achieved with bright location under lights grown cooler.

bemedal - disbud if you want or just enjoy the flowers ;0) Easier to train up a plant from the start and keep it disbudded. I do like growing trailers from leaves.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I spent the morning experimenting..............i sent Rain the little solo cups and one had the Ramblin Amethyst...................I just want to see if they will travel...........................i don't even have room to pot up 6 or 8 of those and I can't stand to throw them away............we will be hearing from her when she gets these solo cups of babies still coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Zone 1)

Oh, Bite Your Tongue Gail .... Throw away a Plant??? Especially a Gessie?? You know there are lots of Gessie Lovers here on this forum who would pay you postage to send mail those plants to them! :)

...... I'm not talking about me .... though I would love to have one stand full of mini's and one full of trailer's ... I just need more room! I've added to my dream of a house with a huge glass room for an indoor botanical garden ... I also want a room for nothing but potting ... shelves full of supplies and a large planting table with a sink with running water too. All in air conditioning! I had to repot a couple of things today ... it was 94 degrees at 11:30 this morning! I finally came into the kitchen, cleaned off the kitchen table, covered it with newspaper and brought all my supplies inside and worked in there! Hubby came home this afternoon, walked in the kitchen and said, potting plants in the house??! I told him i could not stand the heat! He just laughed at me. I did get a few things repotted too before cleaning up and getting ready to cook dinner!
