I'm looking for seeds to the dark red variety of crepe myrtle. I'm going to want to plant about 6 or 7 of them along my fence line next year but can't afford to pay $30.00 or more a pop for them. I have the following that I can trade (yeah I know not a lot of trees)
Brugmansia: versicolor peach, pink, peach, cuba
Hibiscus: mostly tropical (d mail me for list for cuttings)
Ice plants: yellow, red, lavender
Almond verbena (if someone will tell me how to propogate)
Lots of morning glory seeds
yellow butterfly weed seeds
A lot more seeds let me know if you're looking for something in particular.
crimson crepe myrtle
If the dark red one you're after is a named cultivar (which most of the commonly available crape myrtles are) then it probably wouldn't come true from seed. I know you can get crape myrtle seeds, but I don't know how sure you can be what color they'll turn out. If you buy a named cultivar, you can also buy one that'll be less susceptible to powdery mildew (which can be a big problem in humid climates for ones that aren't resistant). You won't get that benefit growing them from seed either.
I'm not sure what the name is. I've only started seeing them in the last couple of years. I'd take cuttings for that matter. Though I know that it may be a little late in the year for that. The cheapest that I've found them locally is $29.99. I have the white ones that I can root, but would like to do a maroon/white theme, being an aggie and all that. lol
Crepe Myrtle seeds are readly on EBay, but the points of the above must be read. You will not know the color or if they will take your area.
It might be better to look at other leads on a cheaper tree for the area you needs. Think about RedBuds maybe, or Vitex, or.... (I dont know for sure what would work for red crepe myrtles.)
For cuttings just wait untill fall and keep track of where you see the best tree. Hard wood fall cuttings of crepes are really easy.
I really want the maroon and white thing. These are such a deep red that they are just about maroon.
I would say find a tree now and get cuttings in the Fall after the leaves drop.
You could always just buy one of the exact one that you want and then get the rest of them from cuttings off of that one. Or at the very least stop by the nursery and find the cultivar name, that way if anyone around here has cuttings you'll know which one it is that you want.
True... 6 for 30 is not bad.. buy one and take good cuttings to start the rest.
Dad gum I'm glad I hang out with such smart folks. I'm such a ditz I never thought of that. Thanks, now, just take cuttings, use rooting hormone, and good potting soil???
google "dormant root cuttings" I just did about 15 diffrent Mulberries this last year.
