Been fascinated with this forum, the wealth of knowledge that evreyone has. The beautiful blooms that get posted. I am just wondering how one can plant several varieties because they grow so big and take up a lot of space. if you can post a picture of the collection it would be nice. I frequent the hosta forum and been reading the brug forum too. Thank you, Bellie
How many varities do you have?
Ok, I still say I'm a "newbie," because I just started enjoying brugs last summer. Bellieg, there are hundreds of cultivars of brugmansias, and to post pictures of them all would be impossible. :(
Last year, I started out with 5, now I have 25 named brugs, all growing in pots, and I am growing out seedlings for others as well. Yes, they do take up a lot of space, and my car is going to be evicted from its nice, cozy garage in the fall because of the brugs I have.
Are there any particular cultivars you are interested in seeing? Or colors? Pink? Dark Pink? Yellow? White? Doubles? Variegated?
There are 7,000 hosta cultivars so how many brugs are there? I was interested to see the gardens of those that plant them in the ground. Bellie
I can't post any photo's yet because I don"t have any named Brugmansias. I hope to be able to have some soon. I would like to know who all are planning to chop their named ones and when. I seem to be just a tad too late everytime to get some. LOL
I have at least 78 named brugs. I lost count a while ago.
last years seedling sorry forgot to send picture

Jestelleon,
Thank you for the pictures, you must have a huge lot!! It sure is pretty and you have patience to start them from seeds too. Bellie
Bellie, I have a acre but there is so much shade that it is hard to find room for all my named ones. The seedlings I am growing are for people who want to cross them looking for stronger plants and fewer bug lunch plants. Most of them will not be any good so after working with them for 2 years you pull them up and put them in the compost pile. Joan
Joan
Are any of those seedlings from last year blooming for you?
I have lots of brugs, anywhere I can fit them, Bellie- I will d-mail you photos tomorrow. More than half my brugs are seedlings and I have one double seedling started in on New Years that is blooming outer white, with an orange creamsicle inner skirt. That blossom is now gone but will post fotos of later blossoms.
Another addiction!

I am sorry for shortening your name. I like the last picture, does it have a fragrant smell? thnak you for sharing. bellie
I'm pretty sure I have about 150 varieties. BUT, I'm working on bringing it down to about l00. I know i'm a fool for a flower.
They are stored in the garage and greenhouse during the winter, and most are growing in pots, 5 gallon pots, with the newest double flowering ones in big 20 and 30 gallon pots. They aren't allowed to get big around here. When I say stop growing they stop LOL If you believe that, I have some land in Arkansas I'll sell ya.
No REally, they don't get all that big when their pots are 5 gallon or so. they tend to get root bound and their growth slows down.
Even with pots they tend to get homongous(sp). With our lot at almost 1/2 acre iwith all my plants looks like a jungle!! They are pretty though. What do you do with the cuttings? I have almost 50 but mostly unnamed. Bellie
Bellie,
It has a lemon smell. I realy like it and it is a heavy bloomer. If Brenda does not want to name it then she may give it to me and Maggie.
Joan
How many varieties do you have?
One:
Jared's Joy
New at this obviously. Bought one nice plant from Seedsprout in early June. Put it in a 15 gal. white ez-life grow bag filled with rich soil and it blossomed last week. Two more blossoms are forming now. Disappointed because there was no scent we could detect. Does this happen with the first blooms after shipping? Can we expect what Seedsprout described ("wonderful early evening until mid-morning fragrance") ?
David, the first blooms are not always true to the plant. It is getting hot so that could change the color and hurt the smell. What is the name of the brug? Brugs have all the way from no smell to a smell that will fill the yard. Wait for the next flush and see what happens. Seedsprout is a very good place to buy thing so if it does not smell after the next flush give hem a call.
Joan
I often miss the smell on mine because I'm not usually out there at night, and early morning I'm too busy getting ready for work. The few times I've been near Brugs during the high scented times have been heavenly. Most have some scent, but some are stronger than others.
jestelleoan...thanks for the information. Seedsprout is very professional. Plant came in great shape and didn't think I would have a bloom so fast. Almost instant gratification.
"Jared's Joy" is a new named Brug. If there isn't any fragrance later on, I will mention that to Seedsprout just so they know. It is a nice plant and a good value as it is so I really have no complaint with Seedsprout.
i'm pathetic... i only have one, and it has never bloomed. we got it at a master gardeners sale, and i planted it in the ground in Lexington, SC. it had buds, but a very unexpected and out of season freeze got it. it was october and it got into the 30's. it returned the next year, as expected (they are used as perennials up there) and hardly reached 3ft, when other people's were 6ft. then for some unknown reason.... it didn't come back this yr. luckily i cut it down, and took two cuttings, the largest of which i rooted (i forget what happened to the other one). it is now in my yard. 2 ft tall, but picking up speed... maybe a bloom this yr. my datura bloomed after babying it for 2 yrs in a pot from a seedling. now it has 5 buds on it, and is growing great. hopefully my luck will spread to the brug....

David,
Jared's Joy was not in the store now but when it is new it takes a long time to reproduce them.
They do not bloom well when it is to hot but will start again when it cools down.
DM me in the fall so that you can have more then one. Joan
Die hard, they need good sun (not noon sun) lots of water and feed them like crazy.
DM em in the fall becaues I would heat for ya'll to only have one plant.
You all need strong plants from TX. Joan
i started to feed it more and it looks better. i wont forget to d-mail u. they get sun til about 2:00. if they dont get one of our pop up t-storms that we get almost daily somewhere near us, then they will get watered by the irrigation. i feed it 2x a week
I saw a thread where someone.. I can't remember who right now..sorry. Said they loved the scent of Butterfly.. I have Butterfly and almost dug it out to compost it cause I go for scent and it had none whatsoever!
Then a few weeks later, the second (and stronger) flush filled the yard with scent! You can't smell it during the day.. it's in the evening or super early morning.. so give it a chance! They are tricky!
While Seedsprout was mentioned.. I have to say, I had my first bloom from New Orleans Lady about 4 or 5 days ago and talk about fragrance!!! It was to die for.. I'm in LOVE again... oh yeah, it was great!
zzbabies,
I have NOL too. It hasn't bloomed for me yet but is getting big. I just love this brug! We have taken to calling it Jurrasic Brug because of the huge leaves and the way it grows. I can't wait till mine blooms. Now I am looking forward to the fragrance too.
AngelTree have you got blooms? Is it hot there where you are? With a zone like that, I'd guess it's a yes! LOL I'm in a jungle of green probably till Fall... it gets scortching hot here.. I have misters on some of the sensitive babiez.. The only blooms I can get are on Butterfly and Candida Dbl White.. other than the one NOL I got.. Another L O N G Green Summer! :)
The only one that will bloom for me here right now is my CG! We have had like 25 days over 110 ! The CG still blooms the crazy thing.. No my NOL hasn't Y'd yet it is around 4 ft and still going up with 3 big main stems lol. Hopefully it will bloom this fall (fingers and toes crossed). I heard that Butterfly does well in the heat, maybe I should get that one too. I hope it cools off for ya..I'd wish that for myself but I know better LOL!
Yep, I figured your in the heat pretty bad! Wow... makes me feel silly for complaining about our heat. For the last 2 weeks it really hasn't been unbearable.... it's just that anything under the upper 90's won't last long enough to produce blooms.. that's okay.. I'll be in hog heaven come Sept & Oct... I'll stock up on batteries for the camera! LOL Our summers are always like this... this has been an incredibly mild summer for us.. I really shouldn't complain, patience is a virtue I'm not all that blessed with. :)
I got Butterfly & Whiskers for heat tolerance, but Whiskers hasn't done anything yet... Butterfly has given me 4 blooms so far, 1 or 2 at a time. She couldn't take direct sun here though. She has to be shaded. Candida Dbl White has given me 3 full flushes and she is LOADED with buds again! Now THAT is heat tolerance! I love her. She is in full sun till 1 or 2pm and doesn't even wilt at all.
Last year was hotter than this year. Amber Rose did very well in the heat. So did Milk & Honey, Tequila Sunrise & V.Apricot.
Of course Isabella and Frosty Pink bloomed nearly non stop... but I don't have them this year, seedlings are more exciting. :)
It sounds like you have some good varieties for your area. I guess it is all trial and error.
Thanks for the info on the heat tolerant varieties. Gonna have to try some of those. I agree , at least we can grow them in fall and winter~ that is if they survive the summer lol.
Some of mine look really really bad now....
I thought I had a candida double white but it turns out that Logees sent a shredded white instead LOL! The shredded white's foilage looks okay (in shade of course) but it has stopped blooming completely. So has frosty pink which I usually don't have problems with. I have some smaller brugs that get only morning sun that have completely lost every leaf they had, and act like they want to go dormant~ I know it is the heat. I put them in the house under plant lights and now they are getting new leaves. I wonder if extreme (110-120)heat could actually force them into dormancy? The roots look good but they lose all thier leaves and quit growing like when you put them in winter storage. The stems stay green and they stop taking up water and just sit there!! LOL.... Put them back inside and they start to grow again~ this is the wierdest thing. Geesh at this rate I am gonna have to oversummer brugs instead of overwinter them!
For the last few years I lived in a subtropical area and didn't have to deal with this but I grew up in Phx so I guess I shoulda known what I was in for here :)
I have some seedlings too this year that I am growing. They all have to stay inside now or they'll croak. Sure wish I had more blooms too right now..CG has finished its last flush and now I am craving that brug scent, all I can do is drool over everyone else's photos :D I am glad people are posting them.
110 - 120 will send me into dormacy! LOL
Hi all! New to Dave's but not to Brugs. I've got 50 + named ones, and I don't know how many seedlings. I'm not very organized, so they're kinda put wherever there's room for them! LOL
Over 90 degrees sends me into dormancy...lol
I have only 17 different varieties. I feel inadequate compared to TeresaInCAL!
Welcome to the brug forum, Teresa. I'm with you on the heat. It's been a heck of a summer so far.
Selling Brugs was supposed to be a way to make some extra $$ for me. But turns out, I love them so much I hate to part with them! Hehehehe, I keep thinking, "How can I sell that one, it's going to bloom!".
Then I've got to name, and register 2 varieties (thanks to a very generous hybridizer) that I grew, and so now I'm hooked on growing them, and hybridizing too, I've lots of my own I'm waiting to bloom.
Sick huh? LOL
