Aren't these just the absolute cutest! Madame Butterfly (Mak) has many small blooms whose petals curl right back. These are from last fall's PNWLS sale, a bag of 3. I planted in a triangle about 6-7 inches apart and put a tomato cage over them. This spring I noticed that 2 of the bulbs put up 2 stalks and the third bulb, well, I'll show in my next post.....
Jult 14 Blooms
I think this is my first lily from seed collected from my own garden (all of my other seedlings are from purchased seeds)! The label says Gold Eagle clone OP. It doesn't look very special but it is hard to see in this picture-- it has the same dark purple flecks in the center as Gold Eagle! Of coarse I couldn't resist taking some pollen and smacking it on some other lilies around the garden (including my gold Eagle clone)!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Keep the pictures coming! ;)
Isn't that pretty. :) very nice. :) How tall does it get?
According to the sales brochure, Mdme Butterfly grows to "6' and more". Can't wait till next year! It is about 4 ft tall now, in it's first season in my garden. I think getting 4 stalks from 2 bulbs is a nice bonus!
Very nice. :) My Leslie decided not to make an appearance. Hopefully, she's just pouting... She is very pretty.
Wonderful lily crop you have there. I have never sought after Mak's Madam Butterfly, but your pictures may have changed my mind. That orange one sure looks like Henryi. Oh yes, double stalks make you love it more, isn't that true? Or is it just me?
Pard, you are a great pollen spreader, that I know. Have fun.
I love Mdme Butterfly, and Leslie Woodriff is a bit of a stunner too!
You're all a bit ahead of us, cold summer, but orientals and most lilies are late here. Only the asiatics have done their thing.
I find myself growing fewer and fewer of the upfacing Dutch cut-flower type asiatics and more of the ones that look like species. In particular I like the way the buds are placed spaciously on the stems and the way the blooms sway in the breeze.
Magnolia, the way I view the 2 stalks per bulb, you are getting 2 bulbs at 1/2 price. What a deal!
Of course, some non-asiatic species are upfacing too, but you're right that most species tend to downfacing. Much more elegant and with graceful charm, in my opinion.
I have one in particular that seems to be most promising. It will be the first time blooming, and the downfacing bud nearly touches the stem. It's from Chen Yi, and is supposedly L. nepalense.
