Smoke Tree

Newton, NJ

I was just wondering if it is possible to root cuttings from this tree-
I see a neighbor of mine has one and I am bold enough to ask for a cutting
if it will work with a root starter or something.

Thanks

If you're really interested, this is what Michael Dirr has to say about it:

"PROPAGATION: I have seen seedling populations of C. coggygria that showed an interesting mixture of green and purple leaf forms; apparently the seed had been collected from a purple-leaved form; seed requires 30 to 60 minutes of acid followed by 3 months at 41°F; nursery practice involves fall sowing with germination occurring in spring; cuttings are not the easiest thing to root but June-July cuttings root 80% or greater when treated with 10000 to 20000 ppm IBA; cuttings should be overwintered in flats or beds and not disturbed until growth ensues in spring; Kelly and Foret, Proc. Intl. Plant Prop. Soc. 27:445─448 (1977), showed that cuttings of C. coggygria rooted best in early June with 86% compared to 33% when collected on July 24; a 1425 ppm IBA + 1425 ppm NAA + 50 ppm boron quick dip improved rooting percentage and quality; I have had 80 to 100% success with softwood (June) cuttings treated with 1000 ppm IBA-quick dip, peat: perlite, mist "

Since it's almost mid-July, sounds like it would be easier to find the plant at a local nursery - check out sales at nurseries during the summer- we picked up a couple of them in July that had been marked down substantially!

I got mine from Arbor Day, they are cheap there but just a little biger then a cutting. Over all a good deal for the price.

Great thanks for the info. Debbie - your post was interesting but I think way beyond my scope at this point. I am going to check out the local nursery and see what I come up with! : )
