Uses for Twine in the Garden

Roscoe, TX(Zone 7b)

Does anyone else use twine to hang hummingbird feeders? I was trying to figure out where I wanted to hang my hummingbird feeders. Well, I looked around and saw that my choices were very limited to house overhangs and trees. Well I wanted to put a feeder about two feet away from our patio covering, because when the hummers come to feed on a feeder under the covering, they are in the shade, and they look like black silhouettes. If I could put the feeder two feet out from the covering, we could see the actual colors of the hummingbirds. Well, I looked for two anchors and ran some twine between the two anchors. Well the hummers really seemed to rest on the string. I also discovered later that vines also use the string to climb upwards. If you get the black string, you will hardly notice it in the yard. Every once and a while you might be playing catch with a football or something and hit a string. Some people driving by have commented, "How do you get those feeders to hang in mid-air like that? Kinda funny. Anyway, here's some pics of what I am talking about.

Hummingbirds, dragonflies, and other insects like to rest on the string.

I was using a piece of twine to hang mine, but have changed it to a piec eof florist ribbon right now, as it was the only thing I could find.

I found the twine worked great for awhile then it kinda fell apart. Don't know if it was the combination of the weight of the feeder and the rain and heat, but it desintigrated like the twine on my feeder and broke loose from where I had it holdign the crorners of my shade cloth.

Maybe your black is stronger?

Really cute pics!!!!!!! : )

Last year I ran twine up this telephone pole to see if my annual vines could climb all the way up there. They did. I wouldn't recommend running twine up telephone poles again, it's probably illegal. Hehe. But it was interesting.

You have to get the thick twine. If the twine is too small, the hummers have a hard time balancing on it.

Plowdaddy...
Not about twine.. but I want to know what kind of plant that is in the far right corner of your first picture... my neighbors have a short one in their yard with kind of darkish purple flowers.. big flowers and leaves... and I like it a lot. Iis it a rhodie or a hibiscus? I'd ask them, but ever since I asked them not to let their rotweiller take a dump in my flower bed, we've been avoiding each other.

I'm not sure if I'm talking about the same plant that you are, but yes, there is a perennial hibiscus toward the right of the picture. The variety is called Lord Baltimore.

I would think having your feeders on twine like that also helps keep ants off 'em, yes?
AND,,, unless my squirrels can tightrope walk, perhaps that'd help keep them from tipping up the hummingbird feeders and taking a sip. I kid you not, the stupid things hang upside down from their little back toes clutched to the hook and drink out of the petals on the feeders. I knew I didn't have THAT many hummers in my yard. Then I busted a tree rat swigging one back.

Hey Plowdaddy.

Love your twine ideas. Just wanted to say that we are almost neighbors since I am in Abilene. Your yard looks great. Could you tell me in the first picture is that Joe Pye weed I see? I have wanted to get some plants but just got seed so am trying that. Surely if it grows in Roscoe it will grow here. Also I see you are having luck with hummers and I have not had one in my yard all summer. Send some over please. lol
