A lily question

Flat Rock, IL(Zone 5b)

I bought several lilies this year and planted them expecting the bushy kind like Stella De Oro or Tiger Lily. What came up are the spiky ones that don't bush out. Please explain to me what is a day lily and what do you call the others?

What you have, and what this forum is about, is a 'true lily'. Lilies are scaly bulbs, put up a single stem per year and each bloom may last for several days.

Daylilies have a fibrous root system, may put up a few stems per year and the bloom lasts for one day, hence the name.

I'm guessing that by Tiger Lily you mean the old fashioned orange daylily, AKA ditch lily, as there is also a lily type that goes by the common name of 'tiger lily'.

Hope this helps ~

They have a forum on daylilies right here on Dave's. Moby was right. Sounds like you got a tiger lily. I think you will be plesantly surprised when they bloom.
