The heat is on.........

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

here in Virginia!! Talk is 105F today and not such a great day for Erin and Tim to 'tour' with the realtor. They will be visiting me this afternoon and I can't wait to meet them, especially since we are traders. Spare a thought for the less fortunate at this time, especially the elderly and those who do not have a/c. Please watch out for them! I know you all love and care for your animals but if you see any animal in distress please go to it's aid or report it to the SPCA. I was watching those tiny birds at the birdtable this morning and wondered how they survived this heat, but survive they do, just like the wild coreopsis that is baking in hard clay in my garden and blooming it's head off. Must go now and start baking - I have 'company' coming. Keep cool my friends and watch out for the rains which must inevitably come :-)

Louisa, its a cool 72*c here, just perfect, want some :-).

it was 110 here in michigan-with the heat index-crazy!
We really need some RAIN!! Thank goodness for our POOL!! Its to hot to do much else!

Kitchener, ON(Zone 5A)

99.6 in Southern Ontario today. How's that for a Canadian summer!

Oh Louisa- it really is oppressive, isn;t it? And your right about the elders and animals!!! Must be careful!! I'm even worrying about my noew rose bushes... a few now seem to be struggling- leaves yellowing quickly- I give them some "food" yesterday - I hope that's what they needed- I'm been busy keeping them watered- hopefully not over watering them- and I'm hoping the rose food will stop the problem!

Just eating my cornflakes and thought I would check DG (as usual). Looks as though the heat index is going to be around 110 to 115!!! Good gracious!! Alan, I'll take some of your 72 and willingly. MM I will be glad to pass your message on to Tim and Erin! Gwydion I hear that relief is coming our way via Canada - they call it the 'cold' front!! You can bet your bottom dollar we are going to have some mighty storms. Dori, it's times like this that I wish I had a pool, if only for the exercise...lol!! Jeanne, my roses are not too bad yet, I will keep you posted. Is it wise to feed them in this weather - I don't know the answer to that one.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it's going to be 88-90 today here, but the humidity is 99% right now.

Cordova, MD

Hope you enjoyed your corn flakes, Louisa! I'm not sure if it were wise or not- I did it early morning yesterday and they seem- the two I'm concerned about- to be doing a little better. Had to pick off a lot of yellowing leaves, though- but it seemed to have slowed somewhat. Doesn;t look like it was cause from blackspot... and since they are next to each other attributed it to lack of vitamins in their soil.... so... I took a chance because the leaves were yellowing quickly!!! Also gave em some epsom salt and a banana!!! so.. I hope the'll be okay- one of them is one of my new favorites- a Billy Graham- luscious deep pink large blooms and smells wonderful!!! and they dry great, too!
So... got im my pool last night- but even it seemed to hot!!!

Louisa, it's miserable here too. I don't see how my fiance can work outside 8 hours a day in this heat - I sure couldn't do it. I only let Misty outside in the early am/late evening for a short while and she has a large bowl of water filled with ice cubes. The weatherpeople say we are supposed to get a break in the weather soon - I hope they are right this time.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Carol - I'll get off here soon so that I can take your phone call :-) It really is miserable and I don't know how anyone can work outside! I let the cats out on their porch this am and Patch this evening, but he couldn't stand it even with two big fans going. Not like him at all!! But he does have such a thick coat. It got to be about 110 and humidity like I've never known before. Relief is coming! Jeanne, sounds as though your roses are going to be OK :-)

Yeah it is starting to rain (shhhhhhhhh whisper don't want to jinx it) We have had 1/10th of an inch of rain in 5 weeks here. I think my grass has passes from dormant to all the way dead. Can't water fast enough to satisfy the few plants that are not shrivled from the 98-99 degree heat (that is without the humidity factored in) Hope it keeps up at a nice gentle pace all night and even all day tomorrow

Ughhhh! It is Miserable here as well in New Jersey. Temps are hitting in the 100's and the humidity is so high you can hardly breath. You can even see it in the air. I am waiting for them to start the brown outs. Some say it is supposed to rain this weekend, but I don't know. I sure do hope so. We desperately need it as well. Hope everyone keeps cool.

Holly - hold on for a bit longer!! The storms are bound to come. I was out on the screen porch about 30 mins ago and the thermometer registered 90, the stars were out, no haze but it felt wet and I mean wet. I can kiss my lawn goodbye!! But grateful that I live in the country - can't imagine how bad it must be in the cities, all those cars, emissions and tarmac! Usually I see the Canadian geese every morning and evening and they are nearly always at the lake, but they seem to have disappeared!!

Point Pleasant Beach, NJ(Zone 7a)

Lousia,
Ya know what, I too noticed that about the Geese the other day. There is a little lake by us, and usually they are walking back and forth and stopping cars in the middle of the road by their slow waddling!!! But not lately. I think the water is just to darn hot for them!
Still plenty of humidity,I don't know the temp outside right now, but the humidity is coming in the house despite the A/C thats how icky it is!!! I know soon it will go away, right now I am wishing for cooler weather. But then once that cooler weather does come. I will be wishing for the heat of summer. Thats the way it works I guess.

Do you think they are trying to keep cool in the woods? I mean - where else would they go! The thing about cooler weather is that you can at least put on a sweater and jacket and go for a walk. You can't go for a walk in this heat. I like the warm weather, and I like the snow - I just don't want too much of either...lol!!

Point Pleasant Beach, NJ(Zone 7a)

I totally agree with you! Ilike both, but to much of one or the other just tends to drive one insane!
There aren't any woods by me, I have a feeling they might have sensed the heat wave coming and flew away to cooler terrain! Either that or someone is having lots of geese for din din!!!!! I am J/K!!!!!
