I can't really tell from your photo, but it may be a Japanese Beetle. The description of "lots of these out there, eating my flowers" sounds right.

Linda, I think that's it. That may be the page I was looking at when I got the "Oriental" idea. I looked at a few more pics there and feel confident that is it. Thank you.
It's very similar to the Japanese Beetle in size and habit but the colors are off.
