Too late to plant MG seeds for this summer??

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, all,

Just came across this thread while researching vines for hummingbirds and butterfllies. ..

After seeing your pretty photos I am wondering if it is too late to plant seeds and get late summer flowers here in Zone 6a?

Also, do you have any luck with butterflies or hummingbirds nectaring on your vines?

Thanks so much. t.

Hummingbirds are attracted to MGs. Plant the Ipomoea purpurea species to still get blooms when planting late.

Thank you bindeweedBeth (great name, by the way!)

I will try I. purpurea. I noticed there is a variety on the market that will bloom in 45 days. Do the hummingbirds like your red morning glories the best?

BTW, Do you happen to see butterflies visiting your morning glories? I thought I read that somewhere, but....?

Thanks. t.

This is the first time I see butterflies in the MGs, there have been two living in some of the plants, one is Black and big, the other is Yellow. When I water or look to see if they are forming pods, they fly out, then come back to the same plant. Very interesting to watch.

We prob. won't get a frost till late Oct. or so. Is it too late to plant seeds here?

ANy of the purpureas grow fast in the heat and bloom quickly. You should be fine, but make sure the seedlings stay moist to develop.

Thanks for the good information. I already have some sprouted now and am keeping them watered!!

p.s. I appreciate your posts on the MG threads!

I have butterflies in my garden but I don't know if they are after the other flowers or the MGs. I DO know the hummingbirds make a beeline for the MGs.

Oh, good. I have HBs and would like more plants for them! Thanks.
