Things have gotten a little out of hand. LOL

I've not seen any white Americauna! I'll have to look that up!

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

I have 2 white amerucanas that I hatched from eggs I bought on ebay this spring. In fact they came out of the "power outage" eggs. They're very pretty.

Your white 'crested' silkie looks to me like it would be a female and your pic of the buff that's not so 'crested' looks like it's a male. At least that seems to be the difference in my silkies. My female silkies also look like the have a 'puff ball' on their heads rather than a 'crest'. The males' tend to 'wear their's back' for a lack of a better 'discription' and they also have more color on the sides of their face.

Well! What do you know! White Auracana with "ear tufts"! LOL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araucana Good call CC!

I had read somewhere and also see it on the Wikipedia entry, that about muffs, beards an tails being disqualifications for American birds (in showing) but standards in European birds. That one says ear tufts are expected. I have no idea if those are rumpless or not. I do know some we have seem very short in the rear. My kids do want to show birds next year. After we slim down on what we have, we'd like to try some other breeds.

Julie, I remember your power outage eggs! I also remember hoping they'd be okay and being thrilled when they were. :)

Halnik, that was a great description! All three of our whites have those large puff balls as you said. The two buffs have much less on top and the one as I said, is "smooth".

I never posted the rest of the pics.

Gold Campine? I'm going by the bars on the feathers. I had thought they were something else.

Gold Laced Wyandotte?

You know, the more I look around, the more confused I get. LOL

I had thought our one bird is a Speckled Sussex but then see this! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Jubilees12wks_4.jpg

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Halnik, here's a good pic of one of those "laid back" crests. Is that what you meant?

What is this one? I had thought Gold Campine then Partridge Rock but it has barred feathers and not pencilled.

Araucana is different from Ameraucanas
Ameraucanas were breed from Araucanas in the 70's
thats where they get the colored eggs

Araucanas are rumpless(have no tail feathers)
they have ear tuffts
Ameraucanas have a beard and muffs

I have some Araucana eggs due to hatch next week
keeping my fingers crossed

That last one is penciled...not barred

At least say you are happy I am learning the terminology! LOL

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

'Chelle
I am so proud of you

now I gotta get everyone to use the proper terms for
Cock-a male older than 1 year
Cockerel-a male under 1 year
Hen- a female over 1 year
Pullet-a female under 1 year

There was a man, sadly he died 2 years ago,but he taught me so much about polish
His family had raised and showed them for over 100 years

But if I said Rooster instead of cock bird he would turn around and walk away from me
muttering....have I taught her NOTHING???????
Even now I flinch if I catch myself saying rooster
I know he's watching me....LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

OH! I do know all mine are pullets! LOL And I didn't order a single cockerel but I may have some. :) So, no such things as roosters?? But my cockerel could grow to be cocks but definitely NOT roosters! ?

I think I scared Kathleen when she was teaching me about cows.

Some of the girls did go down and see the lady with all the chickens, turkeys, pea hens, etc. They enjoyed talking with her.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes
your little cockerels will grow up to be cocks....not roosters
only city slickers say rooster.....lol

you gotta take them to the the national in November
They'll freak out
So many different breeds....and there are soooo many
different breeds and varieties for sale
plus pea fowl, ducks ,geese...any thing you're looking for
If you or the girls pick out a breed from your pullets
that they love and want to breed...you'll find a cock bird to breed it to there.....

Just stop and think.....but not tooo long
I hesitate all the time....then I go back to buy it and its sold!!!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I've only been in the country a year and a half.....

We saw lots of awesome baby birds at that daylily garden! He asked if we wanted any and I was dying to say yes but said we'd have to wait. I know we saw tiny peacocks, Japanese (bantams I think) and frizzles. My 11 year old was not happy I said no but we need more coops first and larger ones. The Brahma cock, the variety of Polish, Pea hens, oh my! There are so many neat birds!!

The girls have picked out their favorites of the ones we have but their eyes bulge when we see new ones! I really love the appearance of the Polish hens but the Frizzles were neat too! Too bad the boys get the good looks. :)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

how 'bout polish frizzles?

Thumbnail by crestedchik
Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh CC! That is beautiful! We saw tiny ones that were not very old so I'm not positive of anything other than the owner called them Frizzles. They were all white with a tiny black crown of feathers and above that all white, looked like they had a perm. LOL

The baby peacocks were itsy bitsy too!

We are in the process of redoing the coop that was here when we bought the place. We are moving it over by the barn where it will have some shade in the hottest part of the day. I've got to get them away from my veggie garden as they are destroying it! Ahem. I think we will keep the tractor for the silkies.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Just some country input here! I grew up calling a male chicken a Rooster, I never even heard the term "Cock", until I was grown and that was how we identified "cock fighters"! Those were the people that we never associated with cause they were gambling folks and "smokers and drinkers" ( according to my georgia Bible Belt Grandma) . I really thought the term was a name given the winning Rooster cause he was the "Cock" of the walk! Shows you how back woods I am! Grandma would have fallen over backwards if I had called a Rooster a "Cock"! LOL!!!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Well if you ever go to enter a chicken in a county fair or any show
you gotta know what a cock is.....and not enter him as a cockerel or rooster
and as for telling the difference in the cock or cockerel
the judges can tell
hens and pullets are harder

although I know our fair has a rooster crowing contest

back then I bet it was a bad word.......oppsss
maybe it still is
Is Dave gunna censor me????

around shows cockfighting birds are pit games
They are usually large fowl Old English Game birds not breed to the standard

Then we get in to Large fowl and bantam
some people call large fowl birds Standard
Standard is what the breed is suppose to be breed to
There is a book
The Standard of Perfection
It lists each breed and variety and has the specifics for each bird
weight,discription ,size ,color...etc......including disqualifications
Its a chicken breeders bible
Its been in existance since the 1800's
the latest one I have is 1998

Each breed is judged by that book
just like in Dog shows

So a big chicken is a large fowl
and a bantam is...well ...a bantam

and just tell me to shut up
I'm so full of stupid rules that everyone drills into me....lol

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hey I think its great!!!!
The older I get the more I learn!
Rules and more rules, we never get enough!!! LOL!!!
I envy people with the knowledge to show their birds and other animal babies! I just know enough right now to enjoy them and pray I keep them safe !
I need all the info I can get!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, I just messed up and put my black chicken pics on Tracy's barred rock thread. Grrrr.

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

My GS was 2 when he renamed ours. We have hens, pullets and BOOSTERS!
