Good one Janet!
I have added the family as Gasteruptiidae, by creating an entry for your wasp here: http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/4753/

Let me kmnow when you have added an image and I will select one for the index,

This I got on the 23rd of June, the female was on 5th July. It was a mystery until I came across it today and saw the similarity! It only stopped briefly so I only got one pic, but the legs are black and the tail has the same colouring.

Although the red appears to be in a slightly striped fashion on the abdomen it isn't a lot different from the female apart from the ovipositor.

There is Gasteruption assectator but legs are a different colour, and if I have the female of Gasteruption jaculator the chances are more than high to have the male too.

Yes I agree, it looks OK for a male Gasteruption jaculator

Thanks Ken, I'll add the pic.

I saw the female briefly today hovering over a hydrangea but it disappeared amongst the foliage, would have been nice to get a pic on a flower!
