I just received these a week ago Viburnum Brandywine and V. Winterthur. They were nice size plants but now Brandywine is a 1" stick in the ground and Winterthur is just 1 single stick with a few leaves. Will Brandywine come back? I am so disapointed; what animal would have done this?
Something ATE my Viburnums!!!
Most likely deer, unless the plants were pretty small to begin with in which case it could have been rabbits too. Many plants will come back after being munched so although there are no guarantees, I'd leave them alone for a bit and see what happens. If they do start to regrow, I'd put some wire cages around them to protect them from the local wildlife.
Okay Thanks! No deer here, maybe rabbits got them.
I am so sorry for you, I put cages around mine and they have thrived. But mine were planted in a major deer/rabbit highway. I have to cage everything that is still tender even if they are plants that are " deer proof" until they get woody. It takes a couple of years sometimes. We also spray to keep them at bay, but they win many wars. I would cage both of them asap and they have a good chance to return if the roots have taken. Give them extra water. Fingers crossed for your Viburnums. Patti
