unusual hibiscus foliage

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I grew several Texas Star Hibis last year
They never flowered and the winter killed them off.
I did love the foliage, it was magnificent.
If only I could get those little mettalic sparkles on them...

Tazzy,
Just had a flashback!
Growing up, my older sister was the hippie, my younger sister was the rebel and I was the so called good girl (I was just smarter and quieter than them, lol)
Anyway, my sister, the hippie, decided to grow tomatoe less tomato plants, if you get my drift.
My parents fell for it, and for years, those plants landscaped our swimming pool!

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

LOL cat4, that is just too funny!

I too had tomatoless tomato plants growing on the window sill in my well-postered bedroom.
My father (the landscaper) was skeptical. Didn't look like any tomato plant he had ever seen.

Thank goodness, I grew up...

...not. :-)

Speaking of growing up......... today I woke up to my old hippie husband with cut hair. I am so sad. I love his hair long!! A couple of years ago he decided to revisit his 20 something days. I loved it. He owns an investment firm and took a chance but most of his clients thought it was great. Today he returned to his 50 something years. Oh well, it can always grow again.

Hey CoreHHI, my husband is a true dead head. LOL. In my youth, I went to more Dead concerts than any other artists.
We still listen to them.

Here he is in May at my son's graduation. His dad is 87 and on the left. He had the same words for Tom's long hair as he had all those years ago when Tom was in college . LOL

My hair hasn't been that long in 25 years, lol! In order for it to look that thick, it stays shorter....about ear length.

Ahh, but the one great thing about being a 50's child....I no longer care to waste precious sleeping time, getting up early and putting on makeup.

What you see is what you get....and I like it that way, just fine :)

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I was going to comment on the hibiscus looking kinda like a hibiscus cannabinus I have...but then there's a bunch of hippies over here...lol

I'm only 29 but I followed the Dead when I was a teenager, went on spring and summer tours for two years. I was at the last show they played, but sadly Jerry Garcia passed on my 18th birthday :(

The funny thing is, my boyfriend's hair is way longer than mine, and Kell, from what I can tell your picture, your husband's looks great. But I'm ready for my boyfriend to cut his....sick of waiting for him to get ready! lol

sometimes i wish my husband had hair.....

Hi Kyle, hope your on the mend.
Heres some of my hibiscus seedlings that have some strange leaves too.
These are garden variety crosses that I didn't keep track of the parentage.

Dave67, are you trying to fool Mother Nature? lol

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Great thread! Wished I'd have found it sooner!

My hope is that, one day, we can add a whole new group of plants to the plant files! Just imagine what kind of cultivars DGers could come up with! My mouth's getting dry just thinking about it!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cool. They almost look like they crossed with Rose of Sharon. LOL!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Any blooms on her yet Kyle?

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Eclipse, those hibiscus are to cool, please let us know how they turn out.

and, Kell, I know exactly how you feel, my hubby Dave, went for a trim at supercuts and the girl accidenly cut off his 18 inch ponytail. I wanted to hurt someone. For the first time in since he got out of the ARMY,20 years ago, he had a regular mens hair cut. I almost didnt recognize him....LOL
All banana curls gone, and she made him pay for the hair cut to boot...LOL

But my, how handsome!!!!!!!

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Cat, I think he's kinda cute too, but best of all he supports my plant habit...LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Jamminspoons, too funny. LOL

Dave, your hibiscus look just so great. Good luck with them all. I would love to see what each one's blooms will look like.

Pmaggs, you are not kidding when you say banana curls. If Tom had hair like that I would have gotten a complex. Your No. 1 beau has great hair.....I hope he grows it long again!! How do you cut a thick ponytail off by mistake?

And he supports your plant habit!! What a true gem. Though I can't besmirch my man today. He whisked me off for a weekend in Napa and actually took me to 2 Napa nurseries yesterday AT HIS SUGGESTION!!! I was so shocked. And he paid for 2 begonias I bought. And he paid for them with a smile and not one disparaging plant comment. I was so shocked for last week we were walking by a plantstand in San Francisco and I saw the cutest variegated Chain of Hearts and he refused to pay the $4.95 for it. And poor me had no money. I have been thinking of that plant all week, it had so much PINK.

Kell, lol...I'll paypal you the $$ if you can pick one up for me and ship it...lol. Those are super cute

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

They sure are and they are so PINK!!

I have never seen them before either. I wish I had whined so he would have given in. He challenged me and I had to suck it up. He said I was incapable of seeing a plant store and not buying a plant. Any plant, I just had to buy 1. I told him this plant was special, I had never seen it before but he was unmoved. He said I was incapable of walking away from it. So I walked but boy I am sure looking back.

Sadly it was in San Francisco on the wharf. I won't be back there till we are in the mood for their oysters again. Shoot. The only way I will get it is if my friend Lali drives me to the wharf on one of our SF outings but we have none scheduled this week. Double shoot. More than likely, I am headihg up her way this week.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Kell, we ARE married to the same man!!!!!

What is it, do they have this little book telling them how to psych us out when we want a new plant (or shoes). I get the *incapable* lecture on a regular basis. If I express any regrets later about not buying something he says well why didn't you buy it? Agggghhhhhhhh

(and I have been putting up with this for almost 43 years, LOL)

Maybe Lali will hear your whine and take pity on you, after all, that String of Hearts was PINK.

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

LOL, maybe this man travels around the country pretending to be different husbands ;-) Funny thing, I get that same lecture constantly - do I listen? Heck no!

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I would have said the same, but mine won't even go with me anywhere NEAR a greenhouse, nursery, or garden center. He no longer freaks about the plants I bring home, mail off, or the pile of shipping boxes in the basement...lol. I think I can say I have clearly defeated his fighting spirit.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Hijacked again!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Lali is such a doll to me. She is going into SF Wednesday. I could be so pathetic, I guess. LOL. Better yet I will email her the pic; she is so easy usually when it comes to unusual plants she may find it irresistible. Though she did get me to drive into the city 2 weeks ago, I usually refuse. It is those so steep hills, I am afraid of heights and I freak when my car titters on the top of hill at a red light. My husband and Lali keep telling me it is impossible for my car to slide down the hill backwards but I am no fool and will never believe that. Anyway, she mapped out a nonhill route to a nursery that had a bamboo I just had to have. We just couldn't fit it in her car. LOL

Congrats on 43 years Alice. That is just great. Tom and I were counting just yesterday and we think we are at 29 or 30, hard to count up so high on your fingers. LOL

Karen, my husband refuses to believe there are any other plants nuts out there but me. If he had to be the husband of others, he would kill himself. LOL He really would. He just doesn't get it at all.

Tropicanna, you are lucky you beat it out of him so early. My husband still has flares of "OH MY GOD LOOK AT ALL THESE ____ PLANTS!!!"

Poor Kyle has been scared away by all this girl talk. LOL He is lucky, he can go nuts on his addiction and I do not think he has anyone scolding him every step of the way.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

broncbuster, how did you know I was a hijacker?

Kell-It was quite a fight at first, but short lived, not even 2 years and he gave up on the garden stuff cause he knows I'm a little more headstrong than most. I'm glad you're going to get your plant.....if you need that paypal....lol. Where I got my regular one they called it string of hearts...had to have one.

someone got me this swamp hibiscus for my birthday

Yes, Kyle, you plant "men" are special indeed - although I wonder if their wives are like our husbands, lol! When I was talking to Cindy at the HVH open house, I told her how I was not allowed to come home with even ONE plant "NOT ONE SINGLE PLANT, KAREN, I MEAN IT!!!!!", and of course I bought four that I had to sneak in after he left for work. Cindy laughed and said she's lucky and will NEVER have that problem with Charles!

Yeah, I suppose my Dave would off himself at that proposition as well. I make him as crazy as he makes me, but I always tell him that any other, less headstrong girl, would bore him, lol! He won't even acknowledge that we have a beautiful garden. Everyone else that comes to our house, including his friends and family always say we have the most wonderful backyard, and he just grants and says "don't encourage her", lol ;-)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Bronc, this thread has always had a mind of it's own.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it has become somewhat "invasive", hasn't it?
