CLOSED: Stilt Bug

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Althogh not the best pictue, I'm pretty sure this guy is a Stilt Bug (generic species)

Reference: http://bugguide.net/node/view/89

If this is true, I'm not seeing the family Berytidae under True Bugs list to add a photo ... please advise.

Linda,
I agree that it is a Stilt Bug, but we would need to identify it down to at least the genus, before adding it to BugFiles.
If you succeed in identifying it further, I can introduce the family by creating the first entry, but I need an actual species to do that,

Thanks Kennedy. I'll keep looking ... chances are I won't be able to get further on this one until I get a better photo.

I found where these guys are hanging out ... on the gaura ... both adults and nymphs, so I have a few more photos.

They seem to have the spine projection discussed here for the Jalysus genus:

I found another reference indicating that Jalysus wickhami are associated with Gaura, so the habitat is ok. (Entomological News. Vol. 97, no. 2, pp. 63-65. 1986)

Thoughts?

That looks pretty good to me, especially the link to the food plant.

To introduce the new family, I have created an entry for your Stilt Bug here: http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/4819/

Add your images and I will place one in the index to illustrate the family Berytidae
