would like to have pond but worried about snakes

Tampa, FL

hi snapple and georgia, That was a treat for me too! i do worry about "snakey" loungeing about so "wantonly", as we have quite a few hawks in our area...i have seen many a hawk flying away with snakes in their talons!! I had a semi-tame bullfrog in these ponds, and i enjoyed him...only to see one morning a hawk swoop down on poor ol' granpa frog and fly away with him in his talons...it made me quite sad...but that is nature and hawks have to eat too! take care all, sue

Now I'll really be afraid to approach the pond to look for little 'froggies' lol...terrified of snakes..had never thought of them making their home in the rocks and pond area...yuk/yuk...

Saturday, I just managed to catch and show the neighbor kids an Eastern Garter. It was really cool. The kids loved it. So did I. I've been hopeing for an opportunity to actually catch one but they usually are way too quick for me. One of the kids actually held it too. Then we did the release. They all marveled at how fast it could disappear in the grass. Ponds, the gift that keep on giving.

ah Betty, just little critters more afraid of you than you of them...don't stop your pleasure in hunting for frogs....just be observant...i am not afraid of snakes, but i do get startled when an unknown one pops up from nowhere! lol...

Snapple, what a neat thing to do, i bet the neighborhood kids adore their "mother nature"? You are also teaching them to not harm and appreciate these beneficial creatures, which is a good thing! sue

Today I ran out of both fish-food and Cheerios (my goldies' favorite food in the whole world), so I threw in a handful of dog food for the fish. Snakey LOVED it - grabbed a piece almost immediately and slithered to one of its safe spots. I could actually see it hold the little round green pice of kibble in its mouth; I swear it looked right up at me. Now, here's the interesting part... a minute later he came back for more and I tossed a fiew pieces in his direction. Not only did he pick up a piece without hesitation, but he picked up the identical kind of piece (and this type of Pedigree has at least 4 different color/shapes). So... coincidence? Are snakes color blind?

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

I don't know anything about color blind but I do believe your snake is spoiled! Sheesh! You gonna roll out a down quilt for cold weather? The most I'm doing is leaving a rock pile alone, although I had planned on moving it to a more out of the way location. I cant issue snake eviction notices when I believe they will soon look for a hibernation spot.

wOW gEORGIA!!! I had always believed snakes would only take live prey!!! If i could get my snakey to do this it would be so entertaining! I will try with some kitty kibble...These kibbles are hard, how the heck does he get it down? Very neat snake! He's gonna be six foot before you know it with all this food! heehee....sue will try this experiment tomorrow morning...i don't have much hope in this snake going for it...fish will eat whatever he doesn't!

I caught my little snake today. Still not sure what kind it is. It is tan with black stripes around it. Cute little thing. He was in my skimmer again. I found a fish in my skimmer, a bigger guy. He was pretty sickly looking. I'm thinking my little snake was taking bites out of him. He's alive but barely and in a bucket with extra oxygen bubbling. Hope he makes it.

So, once I caught the little booger, my hubby took him to a nearby "real" pond a couple blocks away. I think he will be happier there, and I certainly will be happy that he is not growing into a big snake in my little pond. I think I will kinda miss him, though. He added a touch of "nature" to my pond that I didn't have to go out and buy. I still wonder where his mama is, lol!

Slither on little snake, slither on.

Tampa, FL

just came in from my morning visit with snakey, i can now pet him and he stays completely still..i stay towards the back of him, as i still don't trust the biting part...i think i would really miss his presence too if he left...

Cnurse, sounds like a garter snake...pretty! yes he will be happier not being fished out of the skimmer....but don't be too shocked to see him make his way home, if it is only a couple of blocks away...(chuckle)!

Uh, nice eulogy Snap!!! heehee... sue

Dallas, GA(Zone 7b)

Crystal - how did you catch the little guy/gal?
Sue is right, Snapple - that is a great.. (well, let's not call it a "eulogy" just yet.....) And, what me... spoil my snakey? nah.... No more than I spoil our 4 former pound-puppies, zillions of birds, tadpoles and those dratted goldfish that just keep reproducing.

If you feed them, they will come

Georgia - He liked to hang out in my skimmer. I took my big net and blocked the door into the skimmer. Then took the small net and scooped the little booger up.

LOL. Yesterday I went out and was cleaning the skimmer. Either he came back or his twin was in there. LOL. He slithered out before I could catch him this time. Wonder why they like the skimmer. The other one I let loose about 2 blocks away into a large real pond. Surely he didn't come back. Too funny!!!

Dallas, GA(Zone 7b)

That is funny!

Tampa, FL

Told ya!......heehee... must be the bugs that collect in the skimmer? sue
