Natural support for lilies

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I really don't want to use metal stakes with my lilies. What are your favorite plants to use around your lilies to serve as supports? I thought roses might work, what else? thanks for your help.

Straight sticks, lol. Or those cheap, green bamboo poles you can get at garden centers.

magnolia, other lilies is strategy #1, of course, since I've discovered that some orientals and orienpets and species like it in houston. yipee! I guess it would be pretty to intermix different heights, huh?

hmmm. grasses would be nice and definitely different. Len, if you have a pic, I sure would like to see it.

Howdy Moby. I don't like the bamboo poles. Although the are "invisible", the base rot so quickly in my area they are a waste of money. I am stuck w/ ugly metal stakes and ugly 1" x 1" wood poles.

thanks for your responses, everyone.

I use green bamboo stalks I get at the hardware store. They come in lengths up to 5 or 6 feet

Not sure, but I don't think grasses will work. Wouldn't the lilies just fall right through?

Grasses, though beautiful, can be pretty aggressive too. The lilies might get choked out over time.
I do have a few of the natural fiber bamboo that stand about 6 feet tall and those are really sturdy and last from season to season, Wisconsin Winter included. They are 6 times thicker than the green bamboo ones you see in stores. Though I use those for smaller ones that need less support.

vossner i dont have pic. i only have 2 lilies blooming. they just have wild grass around but didnt need staking. ordered more lilies for this fall to plant. i planted prairie grass seed this spring and should come up next year.
i know in tall grass prairie the long lanky flowers don't fall over in the grass.
i would assume also that tall lanky lilies in the wild if they were would have been the same way. or any plant that tends to flop over by itself.

Some perennials might be good like daisies or echinacea. Dahlias are holding a couple of mine back a bit. Some of the smaller grasses can form some fairly sturdy clumps. Early in the season maybe some tall columbines. I never think about that when I plant stuff. I'm terrible about just planting where I have a spot:LOL:
