Hi Ron,
Hope you don't mind me letting all the MG followers follow the progress of the little babies.
Just to keep it clear that these are Ron's so if and when i get them to seed or manage to propagate any of these they are going straight to ron so please don't ask me for anything, thanks.

Mike........ooh la la. These pictures make it worth the midnight oil I burned, using internet translators to translate Hodnik's catalog parts into Eng, over and over, and then writing an order and translating it into French to place the order. And then only to find out that Hodnik isn't shipping to the US anymore because of customs.

These pictures mean a lot to Ron , AND to Me. Thanks buddy Frank

No Probs Frank,
I repotted them yesterday and made wigwams for each of them. The pressure to get this right! lol

Ron mentioned that there should have been 12 but i only recieved 10 and 1 hibiscus... any idea? The paperwork that came with them was the same.

Can all of the indica types be propagated vegitivley? or just by seed?

Mike

Oh Mike,
You're going to get some nice stuff here. Very worthwhile project. keep posting those photos too, it is the anticipation, I understand about the pressure..lol

Hey Mike - NIce photos of the plants...

There should also be 1 Ipomoea indica alba...I guess something got 'lost' in the translation...

The I.indica will usually root easily in water and that is how the vast majority of clones are propagated...

Keep us informed of their progress...

Hi Ron,
When i get something to send you i'll send the reciept as well just to show i'm not mistaken!

I repotted them the other day they are growing so fast they'll be out of the house before the end of the week.

The Carica has 2 flower buds on one plant. Will that need to be pollinated by another plant or will it be self fertile if nothing else is available?

Mike

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Hey Mike - The I.cairica is most likely clonal and self-incompatible...if you have access to another I.cairica stran for cross pollination then they should produce some seeds...

TTY,...

Ron

P.S. - I'm going to try again and see if I can get some Ipomoea indica alba to you...

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Cheers for the advice Ron. This could be harder than i thought if they all flower at different times to get anywhere with trying to pollinate them!.. They are bound to flower when i'm away!

Looks like i will be in france in a month or so... buying large specimen plants.... i wont be able to pick the alba up though as its a rush around job.. and i'm not paying for travel so can't expect them to take me anywhere off route.

Shame though.. would have liked to have the chance of looking around Hoodnicks.

The latest.
I have nipped out the tops as they are hitting the top of the window.
Plus i could do with them bushing out a bit.

Flower bud?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Its got to be surely..

Any ideas what to do if i don't have any indica to fertilise it though?

Mike

Hi Mike - Looks like a definite flowerbud on the I.cairica...you would need to fertilize it with a different strain of Ipomoea cairica(!) for it to produce seeds...it will not cross fertilize with Ipomoea indica...

Poor flower.... I'm kind of thinking of taking it out side when it flowers just for the remote chance someone living nearby has one that is flowering too. Yeah i know its the longest shot you have ever heard of but better than watch it wither on my windowsill.

Mike, freezinng pollen is not unheard of these dayse. You might consider a little tradind of frozen pollen. ???? FranK

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I'll consider anything, in the name of science of course.
So how do i do this freezing thing? it can't just be as simple as cutting of the pollen stamens and whacking them into the deep freeze!

Hi Ron,
Its a good news bad news thing.
The good news first....
The rooting experiment seems to have worked.. i have a couple with roots on. I didn't label them as it was just a test to see how quickly and easy it was.. i thought if you agree i woud try sending them to test what the best way is.
Any idea on how to prepare them?
At the moment they are 4inch sticks with one leaf and 2 or 3 roots about 3mm long. (i'l post a pic when i find the camera)
I though wrap in tissue and cling film to stop the drying out and cut all the leaves off to stop them from trying to grow whilst in the dark for a week.
Then post in a jiffy bag.

The bad news....
The flower buds i posted from carica droped off while i was away.. I guess it wasn';t really ready for flowers i think these where produced far too low down to be correct.

Anyway

Speak soon

Mike

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Hi Mike - Glad to hear that the plants are willing to root quickly...

Exacting methods for shipping are probably best discussed in a private correspondence...

The 1st buds on Ipomoea cairica are often produced on the lower plant although if the plant sensed that it was not bright enough (or some other condition that was not conducive) for flowering >that may have caused the flowers to abort...

Looking forward to seeing any further buds and blooms...

Hi Ron,
Thanks for the note. Dmail when you get time about the shipping.

The carica produced those buds before it was potted on. It was a little pot bound when it arrived so i wondered if it was trying to flower due to room, but got more room and produced lots of leaf growth that flowers where not needed now.

Light should be ok, unless its not used to being so far north. Its on a south facing window. Mind you the weather has been terrible here so wouldn't surprise me.

None of my Mg's outside are above 2ft this year.. its crazy weather.

Mike
