CLOSED: Red eyed fly.. what is this?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Just as I was trying to look around, the red caught my eye, moving at the edge of a leaf. It was too small for my naked eye [I use reading glasses] to recognize the details. When I uploaded it, it was a beauty. Never seen this before in my garden. Which is this fly? Any idea?

I can't find this one, but it looks very like this American species, but BugGuide goes no further with identification than the family Platypezidae: http://bugguide.net/node/view/90319/bgimage

A few species for the family Platypezidae are listed > http://bugguide.net/node/view/8626/bgimage
.. but like Ken stated; only the one (he mentions) comes close - very close, if it's not indeed 'the' bug!

I think what you have identified is right. What is creating a doubt? It looks the exact match to me - the angle of the pictures are only slightly different making the area behind the eye visible in the link.

Tha match is fine Dinu. but we still don't have a name for the fly, only a family name.

We need to know at least the genus before it can be entered into BugFiles,

Yes you are right. Now where to look further?

Dinu, there is a place where you can identify flies! I have signed up but not as yet posted any for ID, but by signing you can view pictures in the Gallery. I have found some flies by seeing similarities in a Family, then searching for that family. It's free and could be a great help for positive ID for flies as there are many which look so similar.

It's has some Dipterists worldwide who know their flies, they use 'keys' to identify. You could use it to identify, even put your pictures on there (you need to email the administrator to do that), but also put them on DG. A useful tool!
