I am looking for a large evergreen shrub 10-15ft or tree to block out my neighbors. The area gets about 3-4 hours of late afternoon sun in summer. It gets more in spring and fall when trees lose their leaves. I am in northern New Jersey zone 6. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
Low light privacy trees or shrubs
How about a Skip (or Russian) Laurel? Prunus laurocerasus 'Reynvaanii'. I think they make one of the preetiest live fences. Deer resistance is a plus too. They thrive here at my NJ home in less light than you have described.
Thank you for the info.Would you know how fast it would take to get in the 12 ft range if I were to get a decent size one. Any ideas on where around here to go ?
Dave,
I'm not sure where in NJ Northvale is, so I can't answer your question about where to get one around you. Laurel 'Schipkaensis' is available at the garden center I work at in Union County. If that is local to you, or worth the drive, send me a d-mail and I'll hook you up. Presently in stock, we have 3', 5' and a couple of 8-10' beauties available. I think you can expect 6-9 inches a year out of a Skip if they're happy where you put them.
Happy planting!
Cleo
