Welcome to the Gardening by the Moon forum

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I"m back home now... since the park has "Camp Ground" status ... we only have water at our sites Apr15th - Oct15th

we can go up there, but have to go to the Club House for running water.
so - I'm basically home until Mid-May or so.... BUT -- i do plan on spending most the summer up there again next year.
we shall see how it goes.

I really do find this Gardening by the Moon fascinating - though literally being out there after the sun goes down..i get eaten alive by mosquitoes - even with bug spray on.

But - i have followed some of the guidelines on "when" to plant. Very interesting.

You don't have to garden after dark to garden by the moon's cycles.

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

I know, dovey. I was just kidding! ☺

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, hey it doesn't matter here--the mosquitos have been eating me alive, even during daylight hours! Oh, was just flipping through next year's almanac, and it includes November and December of this year, so I was happy to see that.

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

Silly me... I'm so literal at times.

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL! That is so easy to do when we are reading a conversation. I don't know how many times I have read something and the wondered "Is that what they meant to say?"

Teach on, elders, teach on!

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

I have spent the last 2 hours reading at this site and it is a fun read.

Dear elders: Come BACK! And teach us more about gardening by the moon!

Merrimac, WI(Zone 4b)

This thread has been quiet for a few weeks. Maybe they're all just getting ready for Thanksgiving.

Nah, some of us are still here. For me, there's always the time when I don't rely on the moon signs... that is, time when I am not active in the garden. I use the signs for other things like haircuts and dental work.

My biodynamic gardening book using moon signs came, and although I won't have time to study it until after Christmas, I DO plan to use it next year. That will be in a new thread on this forum.

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

I am looking forward to it, darius. I have known folks who did everything by the moon and they had much better luck than I with their gardens. I did everything according to when I had time. I would like to follow the phases and work with it next year.

darius, I have found it hard to find anything related to biodynamic gardening, such as you described. Did you order it online? If you don't mind.

OTOH, if you are going to start a thread and share info, I definitely look forward to that.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yes, biodynamic info. is hard to find. Acres USA http://www.acresusa.com/books/books.asp carries some good books. I ordered my bd calendar from Amazon

Excellent! Thank you very much.

Really looking forward to the posts, darius! Always interested in this sort of thing.

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 5b)

Glad to hear from Darius!
I guess everyone else is busy with the holidays, that makes sense.
I, on the other hand, am doing my best to keep my head in the garden until I can get my body back out there!
Any other knowledgeable ones checking in?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I had forgotten about this forum. I've just started back vegetable gardening. We do everything by the signs. I have two neighbors that have farms, they do too. We compare when to do things. One is from Switzerland, she's the authority for us. She does absolutely everything, including watering her garden by the signs.

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

Really, even watering by the signs... wow. Do you know what signs she uses to determine the best days to water?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I can ask her. I heard their irrigation pump running a few days ago, but I can't remember which day.
When my neighbor plowed my garden she told him which days to plow. She said it had to be tilled three times and the days were about 10 -11 days apart.

I would love to know.
Thanks

Calalily, very interesting stuff isn't it? I will also be checking in for that info. Do you also practice other biodynamic principles such as for soil preparation? I find it all so facinating.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I agree, it is very fascinating. We practice 100% organic gardening, not 100% biodynamic though. I use lots of compost, but no special formulas were added. The only special preparation with the garden soil was in timing the cultivation. Everything is mulched, including the pathways and no one walks in the garden with shoes on.

I also garden 100% organically. My heart would love to introduce biodynamics, but unfortunately my head cannot grasp it all........maybe someday. On the other hand, I can just think of it like a recipe that I can play with.

I'm just at a starting point-learning the moon's relationship with the soil. Would love to hear more about the entire planetary influences, as your neighbors' practice.

I am new to Dave's Garden and found this forum. I have gardened by the moon for many years. Not until this year did I stick to the planting vegetables by the quarters as described by walkingwoman in July 2007. The problem I encountered was that during the correct moon quarter for planting certain vegetables, the good signs such as Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces weren't always available or you had a one day window to plant and I usually had to keep grandkids or something else important on that day. But I really do believe in planting with the signs. I've done several experiments and proved the signs to improve my outcomes.

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

I do my best to plant during the good signs, but like you sometimes it just doesn't work out. I then choose second best... or at the least just the correct phase of the moon.

My weeds seem to know when I "can't" pull them!!! I'm constantly plucking them when I should be planting (but don't have anything to plant)!

If anyone is still looking for a biodynamic gardening calendar, this is a good one that I have used a lot in the past:
