Very cool. Everyone make sure you go to the end for the big finale

Tabasco, we had a nest of Carolina wrens fledged this morning that had nested in one of my epi flower pots on a plant stand by the back dooron the covered porch. Kind of fitting that they took flight this morning on the 4th. DH saw 3 go, but I missed them. Drat. Originally there were 5 eggs. That poor plant has not been watered since I discovered the nest when mom nearly hit me in the face when I started to spay the plant, not seeing the nest, back in early June. It has been fun to watch the parents be so attentive. Have a great day. Thanks, Patti

bb--glad you are enjoying your happy little wrens. Aren't they cute? We babied some all thru the winter and now are nowhere to be seen. Maybe you have them?! Any way I must remember to plant some epi in a pot--maybe they will come back next summer!

We have a good time watching the goldfinches picking seeds from the dwarf sunflowers in a centerpiece on the patio dining table--it's like an animated color co-ordinated centerpiece. I will definitely plant them again there. So picturesque! (Wish I had a photo but the cam is out of commission.)

Thanks, Betty-- Isn't Jacquie a fun e-card creator? I love her ideas.

Cute cards all. DH took some pictures as they fledged. And the last one in the collage is the empty nest. Now they are hanging out in a little quiet bed in a scrub oak just around the corner. We loved having them so close. I think they built the nest one week when we were away and I am sure that they never thought it would be inches from our main back exit and where we basically live when outside. Patti

This is the back door and they put their nest in the back of the potted pink Epiphyllum. Poor birds had no piece and quiet with us and the dogs coming and going. But we know 3 of the 5 survived. Patti

I bet the dog made them crazeeee!

Not one, but two bouncy border collies who eat right by that back door. They were really very good about the birds and we would vacate the table when they seemed anxious. I will miss my little birds. Here is one of the girls on the porch. Patti

I now see that they are both in the picture. Little Nell is behind the table near the birds. Patti

that was a nice card :) I just happened upon your thread

we also had a wren's nest ~ they nested in a new bird house that we got at the Phila flower show this yr. They left a few wks ago, but this morning I looked up on our phone lines that go thru a red maple in our front and there were.....gosh....at least 10 little wrens; I couldn't help but wonder if any were from the recent nest. No bird at the moment in the "wren" house in the photo but we have another house in our moon gdn that has an occupant wren!

Wind--what a cute little bird house and they must love it to have 10 wrens in the vicinity!

BTW, What kind of wrens do you get in NJ?

And if you get butterflies, do you know what kinds you get in your garden? Just wondering....

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I had to look up what kind of wrens we have in my trusty "birds of NJ" field guide!! My first thought was, "aren't all wrens the same?"...always learning how many diff types of everything there seems to be! We have HOUSE WRENS and CAROLINA WRENS here :)

As for butterflies ~ we had alot of monarc's last yr especially; also have viceroys, red-spotted purple, eastern tiger swallowtails (black & yell form) and I just identified red admirals.

getting back on your theme of a *** Floriferous Fourth ***...our patriotic colored blooms were blue hydrangea, red monarda and white daisies & hydrangeas!

Tabasco,

The butterflies have been really going for my single dahlias, 'Bishops's Children grown from seed. I thought you'd want to know.
