Updates on Plants

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I learned to cut back the foliage after blooming. New foliage comes back nicely and the leaf miner is no longer around

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I ripped out the Columbine when I couldn't handle all the massive miner laden foliage. Some had the roots ripped out, others just the foliage.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did you have your miner hat on while doing this??!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Don't cut back the minor foliage - that's the young stuff.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have major miner damage.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

OK, since you all seem to be talking about the columbine and miners, just what are 'miners'? Remember that I am a VNDG (very new Dave's Gardener), and we are just beginning this year to 'really' garden.

Also, I happen to LOVE my columbine and I am very pleased with this year's blooms!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Here you go Candyce!

Thanks Victor. I'm so happy that you (and several others) are always around to lend a helping hand!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

What a bunch of jokesters!

It looked over the top ugly. I now have some new fresh clean growth.

Where do all the leaf miners go? (Sounds like it should be a song)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

The leaf miners have a short season. Not sure if they go away, transform or get rehabilitated. But cutting off those scarred leaves really works. New growth and no more miners.
Candyce, keep asking. Eleven years and I can;t belive what I stilldon't know. (My wife doesn't seem surprised! ;^)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Miners have a very strong union - short work season.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I like Doc and Happy.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I thought you were sleepy!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Via Google:

Dopey: the youngest, sweetest, and silliest of the seven, and the only one to be completely bald and beardless; wears a too large lime green tunic and purple cap.*

Gee, I wonder who that could be - the youngest, sweetest, etc.??????????

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would love the beardless part. And thanks Pirl. I think.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Quite welcome. When do we get to see you in a "too large lime green tunic and purple cap"? Reverse eggplant?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

When we see Jack in the umbrella hat.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Oh my!

Such images this is conjuring up!! LOL!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor, you are tempting me!

Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Can't wait to see umbrella hat pictures!

I tried cutting all the columbine leaves off, but they came back with miners. In fact, this year when the white columbine flowered, the leaves disappeared (slugs?). Whenever the leaves were there, so were the miners. My garden (and I use the term loosely) has issues. Who else's vinca disappears?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh Loretta! You have the invisible variety. Very easy to maintain I hear.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Funny you should bring up Vinca Loretta,

I had vinca on my "dappled shade bed" and little by little it started to disappear. I pulled up the 6 tiny seedlings that were left and moved it to my more sunnier bed. I thought vinca was a shade grower? I'm probably going to lose it completely and from what I have read about it it is supposed to be an aggressive groundcover? I haven't had the experience with it that's for sure :(

Kim

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It grew well for my former neighbor in shade but that was long ago and I have no idea as to the variety it was.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Okay Mr. Victor - aka reverse eggplant - get your tunic and purple cap ready!

Heeeerrrrrreeee's Jack with the umbrella hat!

That poor guy - look what marriage has done to him.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Once upon a time he was well respected - hard to believe it with this photo!!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

No way - Jack is cool - figuratively and literally. What a good sport he is! Let Jack know he is winning admirers all over the N.E. :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh Pirl - you got him to do it!! Guess I'm checking eBay for purple tunics. Hee hee. How many beers did it take Jack to relent??

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

so, pirl, this is a thread for keepers or those that need to be shovel-pruned...which is Jack?? (okay, I know the answer LOL..I'm just being a trouble-maker. besides, if you decided to send him to the compost heap, I think there would be a line waiting to snatch him up!)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Jack isn't a beer drinker and we don't start cocktail hour until 6 PM sharp! The photo was taken at 10:21 this morning with only high test coffee in his system.

He really is a good sport, Seandor. He's getting a kick out of being on this thread and waiting for Victor in his tunic and cap. Me, too!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Gonna take more than coffee...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

YOUR WORDS, VICTOR:

When we see Jack in the umbrella hat.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I suspect a hacker was involved!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I'll send a hacker after your floopy pufferthings!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I'm changing the subject because I think pirl has lower herself to near profanity with the floofy pufferthings remark. And pirl - I want one of those hats!
When my new neighbors put in the new fence my dwarf fancy (I forgot the name - but it's a pretty one and expensive) disappeared. I thought that it got eaten up by a fence pole hole and I was not happy. Well - I knew they were putting up a fence - I should have moved it - but I still was not happy it was gone. Well today I found the brave little thing putting up some tiny fronds on my side of the fence! It was alive! So I scooped it up from under the fence and put it back in my fern alley where it belongs. It was a good day.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Awesome story, Yankee!! I bet finding your little 'baby' made your whole week!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Prodigal fern has returned!! Congrats Cat. That's a happy update.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

It really did.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Pirl, Jack looks so cute in that darn hat! I bet it keeps his head cool during the day though huh? God luv him :)

Kim

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

That's so cool, you got your little fern back, Cat :-)
