Best time to transplant overcrowded juniper bed?

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

I planted a bunch of little pots of various junipers from Musser Forests close together several years ago, and should have replanted them all in permanent beds but haven't done so yet. Should I give the area a good watering, and then dig them up, separate and replant this summer, or wait till fall?

here it would be fall - but with your short growing season up there I would think maybe summer if they had shade and good water?

I would vote for spring replanting, and like MitchF says give lots of water and a bit of shade until the junipers re-establish their roots. Moving them now, would work if you don't get a really hot, dry spell that sucks all the moisture out of the ground. Re-planting in fall would give them less time to root properly before the ground freezes and the cold, drying winds of winter start to blow.

What I decided to do is to dig around them, lift them up, and then put them right back where they are, water them well, and leave them for a time.... So that the roots have a time to regrow into a nice clump that I will move one at a time and keep watered. When I went to dig up the first one, I realized that I had already pre-dug it in the spring, and it transplanted without a whimper!
