I just found this as a spec on a much bigger picture and when I cropped it down I saw it was a bug. I put out some Praying Mantis cocoons last week near where this bug was found. Could this be a baby mantis?
THANKS
CLOSED: Baby Mantis?
a baby mantis will look like the big mantis. As best as I can tell from the pic I think you have a grasshopper of some kind
Oh shoot Donna!
How cute are those! LOL
I didn't even see mine in person, noticed it after I took the picture and the rose was near where I put the egg casing. I shoudl go look for the casing but I hear you can't trell if they have hatched.
Donna -- they are gorgeous!! i've never seen them that small, though i'm sure i have them. I get mantis every year... last year i had 8 or 9 in one bush at one time.
no, no, please don't shoot donna!
ROFL Trackinsand
i made the mistake one year of bringing in an eggcase that i found outside. i didn't know what it was and i had it on the fireplace mantle. it was still very early spring and cold outside. about a week later, it/they hatched. i felt like such a murderer. there were baby mantis' everywhere and i couldn't put them outside. it was just too cold. they lived in the house and some did survive until i could shoo them out, but it was a bad thing i did.....
good thing is wasn't a hornets nest!!!
LOL Donna!!
when i started seeing them year annually -- i did a bit of research, so i knew what the "nest" looked like
With the field we have by our house.. there are many of those out there... but i've never seen them really small -- usually by August I find them in my bushes and on the fence.... every now and then, not often -- i'll see one fly past... that's a sight to see, because it doesnt look like they are good at it.
I foudn some baby mantis on my hibiscus plants. Was hsaring the phot and one person shared an interestign fact. The females wil generally stay in one place and usually don't run from you and you can learn to hand feed them and tame them. it the males that are the more agressiv e ones and do alot of traveling.
Kinda hard to se e , but her e one of my Mantis hangin on to a bud in the center of the photo. Was a windy day. I go out and can fidn the female s standing guard on the tops of the hibiscus by the blooms.
They bettre than a guard dog I said for pest mgt.
Donna your phot is truly awesome. I never managage to se them hatchign or emerging. You ought to put that pic in the bug files, shows a good pic of what folsk shoudl look for so they don't mistake them for grasshoppers and kill them. Thansk for sharign that photo. : )
i dont know about when they are smaller.. but once mature the female is generally much larger than the male... easy to tell them apart.
they are just so cool... i love watching them... and they are always watching you.
LOL Debi. You are so bad!
I hope mine hatch. I would love a praying mantis pet, Starlight.
actually it looks like an assasin bug if u ask me from that picture
That doesn't sound good. Who does it assassinate?
that's a good bug, kell!
Tcs... Will have to remember that about the female. Thansk for the tip.
I had a pile of trays and pots stacke d up that I didn't get put away. By the time I got roudn to doing it, I couldn't cuz the prayign mantis momma ha d laid her eggs. That wa s I think the longest baby sittign job I eve r had. : ) Was afraid to mov e or do anythign in that area and praye d the neighbor s cats wouldn't get it.
here a good link to the pic's of the assasin bugs that
Bugass talkign about. Just scrol down a bit and can se e all the baie s that hatched.

there is a pic on the web of a praying mantis that caught and killed a hummingbird. We bought an egg case of mantids one year for our apple trees and they are SO CUTE. They are, unfortunately, cannibals. And they will even attack fingers. They fly like ducks --- they do it if they have to, but it isn't very pretty when they do. LOL
>>They are, unfortunately, cannibals.
I did find in my lil bit of research, that even after/during mating - the female will will kill the male (they tend to bite at the neck [to paralyze it i imagine] and then eat the head clean off) There were a few times when i found just the body still attached to my fence... after "doing the deed" she was probably like, "thank you very much...." chomp.... nice nourishing meal - then wanders off to lay her egg cocoon.
they are fascinating to sit and watch.
Now I am hoping for an assasin bug. Who knew my yard was so violent. Thanks for the link.
On shoot, and I bought 2 of the egg sacs. I have so many hummers. I am so grossed out. But now that you mention it, I remember Blaine on the Brug Forum 2 years ago showing that picture with the hummer. But when I saw the egg sacs all I remembered was that they ate bugs. Now I find they may eat me. I wonder if I can sic them onto my neighbor who just painted 2 huge sheds bright red and 1 PINK. HELP!! LOL
So who will win between a fight between an assasin bug and a praying mantis?
Aaaaaahhhh...So, I looked up the praying mantis eating the hummer. First, I'd like to say, that was a HUGE praying mantis...I've never seen them that big around here. I've seen a few babies and a few larger ones...maybe the size of a cricket or grasshopper. If you get close to them and move something in front of them, their little heads follow it VERY closely. I unfortunately did that with my finger not realizing this beast was licking its lips while it followed my finger. Yuck......Anyway, here's a link to the pics I found for the other morbid people out there. Oh, and after seeing the pics of the poor hummer, I'd guess the assassin bug doesn't have a "prayer".

the females up by me are a good 4-5 inches. they are quite large -- but not as big as they are in other areas.
Good grief.... Though yucky to see , just had too. I have never seen a mantis that huge. Unreal. I can tell you after seeign that pic, I am wonderign if I should move my hummer plants a bit away from wher e my baby mantis are hanging out.
I have a colelction of pots fille d with hummer plants and a feeder ner by for them to suppliment and right next to them is the hibiscus the mantis are on.
Don't want to lose either of the creatures, if I can help it.
I have heard peopel say that you can tame a mantis and make a pet out of it. I remember beign a kid and us havign one that used to hand around my parent s front door all the time. it got to be a good siz e but not that huge as above pics. I knwo my mom use d to put piece s of raw hamburger out for it to eat. But that in the days when hamburger was alot safer to eat too.
I been tryign to figure out if there is somethign to supplimentally feed the mantis to try and tame them that way you could kinda move them aroudn the yard to problem areas of pests that might arise?
Feed him a few hummers and he'll be eating out of your hand(not eating your hand) in no time! ;)
