Problems rooting Honeysuckle...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

After I cut them - I snipped the bottom leaves off - wet and dipped in rooting hormone - waited a bit then put in water...Bottom line: I think they're dead....
D-E-A-D...very sad. Any suggestions?

Hi Chantell,

I usually cover the Honeysuckle with some soil, making sure that some leaves are left sticking out for photosynthesis. (Don't know if that is necessary, but it makes me feel good). Keep the soil moist, and within a week or two ,maybe three, you'll notice new growth. Sometimes one can actually pull a piece of plant out of the soil with a few roots on them. They take without any problems.

Hope it helps,
Elsa

Elsa - thank you!!! Don't know why I always assume, if it's a vine, that it should root in water...ugh!!

So you don't need rooting hormone?

if it is new growth i wouldnt but if it is hard wood yes i would use it but you can try it both ways and see which works best for you

the hymalain honeysuckle that i have rooted just a few weeks ago i didnt use the hormone because it was new growth and they rooted but if i would have picked hard wood cuttings then yes i would use the rootone but it isent big enough yet to have the hard wood ,keep them in shade not direct sun that make a difference in rooting an moist but not wet,i usually let them dry out between waterings but not to the point the start to shrivel i hope this makes since

Yes, thanks--glad you asked, Chantell, now I know what to do with mine! :)

I got honeysuckle cuttings from a fellow gardener- first I put them in water and they didn't do much. Then, I used rooting hormone powder and stuck them in soil. Well, that did the trick! They are growing nicely now and I hope they'll winter over for me!
