daylilies

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

a couple to check!

it took me a while to get over the fact that it isn't mildred mitchell...luckily each bloom looked nicer than the last and i believe it's at least doubled in size which is nice to see :-)

Yes, I have to agree with Dori, more like Lee Pickles.

Here is one of my all time favorites. Debbie Smith. She has great branching, nice height, and they say 6" bloom. I just wish for a little bigger bloom with more of a gold edge.

She has bloomed her head off this year and I have been making seed like crazy.
Here she is in a clump.

I found a couple more lillies in the yard. I tell you the deer have been a little lax in their duties.

This one I thought was just an orange one, but it has a little peachy color to it. (my peach lily hasn't had a chance to bloom for years, so I don't think its been wandering)

Okay now after the flower blossoms and theres a nobby thing on the stalk is that going to be the "seeds". Usually I cut them down before they get to that stage so I do not know. How long do I have to keep it there? And then you can plant them? Sorry I dont mean to sound stupid I never knew you could do all this until I joined Daves Garden. But I would love more daylilies and if I could get some free ones thats even better. Im frugal I guess. lol Ronna

Hi Ronna,

Yes that is the seed pod. You can eat them! They are great in a stir fry. They taste a little bit like a green pepper. I used to have a neighbor downstate who used to eat her way all the way around my flower bed that was lined with daylilies. :)

I've never grown dayliles from seed but I think it takes a long time. You'd have to let the seed pod dry on the plant first I think. It's easier to just find someone who has daylilies and needs to divide them and get some from them. They multiply very fast and need to be divided every 3-5 years. I wish you lived closer to me. I would give you some.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

thanks Loon. I do have quite a few. But some of the colors I have I really like and kinda wanted some more But Im kinda cheep and dont want to purchase any more maybe when they are really cheap. I wish we lived closer to you also. That reminds me Its probably time to devide mine really. Then I will have even more next year. :) More plants are always welcomed huh? Boy I know they multiply very fast. They are very easy to divide. Its alway nice to here from you Loon have a gret weekend. Ronna

The pod will start to brown and open then the seeds will be ready. You can plant them in the soil right away or grow them indoors under lights. Daylilies can bloom anywhere from 9months old to 2yrs. Id say plant them dont fry em! LOL

So that is what the deer were doing with that frying pan last night. Eat the flowers, fry the pods. Quite a party.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh cparts I wish I could have been there for that what a site to see I wonder if thay would have invited us for some????

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

glevely,
I don't think those darned deer share. We could have a venison sandwich though.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

sorry cparts but I don't eat the stuff I think its cuz I have to prosess so much of it at work every year but I do love bologna.
Gloria

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I don't care for bologna, don't know whats in it. LOL.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

The deer here seem to be more interested in my apples now instead of my flowers. I've been pitching out some too big squash and zuchinni for them too..........far far away from my flowers.

If we don't get some rain pretty soon everything is going to burn up. I'm watering my new trees and flowers now. I'll put the water on the veggie garden early in the morning. We're supposed to be in the 90's I think for a while. Doesn't take long for everything to dry up in that heat. I just hope the well holds up to the watering.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I wish you good luck loon I'm very lucky I water with lake water right now but I'm still very careful about it so every thing looks good right now but if I had to use my well it would not be good

I like fried egg sandwiches, (duck or goose) just kidding.
We need water too. I saw some rain over the state a last week, but it missed us. And it looks like hot weather too, so glad we all appreciated the wonderful work weather out there when we had it.
Now I can sit with a glass of iced tea and comtenplate the next idea.

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

Well, geesz, isn't this a hoot :) Her name is Jill Masty, she lives on Merry Court! She just called me yesterday to see if I could meet her for dinner at the Red Oak Lounge, but I had so much to do here, I had just come back from being outside! I think if I had known that I was a lotto winner and had to go outside to get the check, LIKE THEY USED TO DO ON TV, they would have to slide it under my door, quickly, lol Just about faint when temps and humidity get like this :(

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

HI Gloria....```````````WAVING HERE :)
That is soooooooooooo funny!! I was at their house a few days ago, she said that Paul had come in and asked if she knew anyone named Tootsie? She said "NO" as she did not know that it was me:) Just gotta get that gal into more gardening and into DG! Anyway Jill and I had walked all the way down and back so I did really see your place, but at the time did not know who you were? Hee, hee. Your flowers are BEAUTIFUL :) One day when I am back at her house, hopefully you will be home and I will just have to meet ya!
See you soon,
Tootsie/Patricia
