Texas Spiny Lizard

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

These guys are really cool! They are all around my place and range in size from 1" to 5" or 6". The males have irridescent blue markings on there bellies. In the fall, I catch all that I find and put them in a terrarium in the house for the winter. I do this because, in the winter, you find them dead from the cold due to the rapid temperature changes. Don't worry though, I release them all in the spring. A few weeks ago, I saw a female sitting in a hole she'd dug, laying eggs. Too bad I didn't have my camera.

What a pretty lizard! It looks like they are in much of the state but not around this area. We do have a lot of skinks and anoles. That's neat you bring them in for the winter.
Do they mostly hang out in Mesquite trees?

We don't have any mesquite trees, mostly hackberry trees. The one in the pic stays in a hackberry tree, but most of them hang around the house in the flower beds and around rock piles.

I found another female laying eggs yesterday when I got home. Once again, left my camera at work.
