Hey Ardesia, I got most of mine at Tuesday Morning also! hee hee. I paint ALL my pots a creamy white to match the house trim. Don't ask why, just one of those anal retentive quirks. Anywho, the paint seems to protect the edges from crumbling. And on the one that has crumbled more than I'd like, I just paint over it, turn it to where it's not visible and voila. All's well w/ the world.
I love them, particularly for large plumies, makes the hauling to the garage task a lot more palatable.
I also like the ones made out of fiberglass, a little heavier but so durable.
And yes, Pirl is superwoman. She puts on her pink slippers and kicks those misbehaving roses right out of her garden. No shovels required.
Daylilys in pots: good or bad ?
A wasp tried to mess with me today and he ended up halved, quartered and smothered but I haven't kicked any roses today.
Nery, You are so clever. I love the idea of painting all the pots the same color. Sure would make it seem more coordinated. My mishmash can be overwhelming to some.
It is still raining here. Over the past 24 hours we have had 2" which is great for us as it was a slow steady rain, not the normal gully washers we get where it all runs off instead of in. The plants are smiling.
Alice, I noticed that your area has experienced a very hot summer, kinda like the hellacious one we had here in 2005. I won't forget that one! Anywho, glad you're getting rains and plants are smiling.
With all the rains we had, our plants are cackling like hyennas! LOL LOL LOL
LOL our summers are always hellacious.
Nery, what kind of paint do you use on your pots? Exterior house paint? Do you put a sealer over it? Thanks!
LOL @ plants "cackling like hyennas!"
I use cheap exterior latex. It lasts a long time so touchups are rarely necessary. The ones that typically need touchup are the clay pots since the moisture makes the paint peel off over time. I just slap a coat right over the bare spot and I'm good to go. Nah, I don't bother w/ sealers. But what I do with the clay pots is apply tar paint on the inside before I ever plant anything. a) retains moisture b) pretty much stops the paint from peeling off. But I haven't been buying many clay pots because the foam ones seem adequate enough.
You get tar paint in the roofing dept. I keep a supply of cheap brushes so once I'm done applying the tar, I just throw the brush away and put my tar paint in a cool place. If you don't store it properly, the paint gets super thick, almost impossible to use.
weren't we talking about DLs? lol
Thanks! Yes, we were talking DLs... but you can't mention painting pots without getting my attention! Thanks for the tip about using tar paint inside the clay pots... I've been trying polyurethane sealer, but haven't been entirely happy with it.
Back to DLs... I've got a bunch of potted seedlings that I'll overwinter in their pots, but I don't think they'll be going in the garage... I'm planning to put them against a south-facing foundation wall, with mulch piled around the pots for extra protection. I've overwintered other perennials in pots that way, and I think it'll work fine.
I haven't painted pots so far. All the pots I bought are like a off-white, egg-shell beige color. Not quite the same shade but all in the same color family..
lcosden, I, too, buy cream white pottery, just so things aren't so darned uniform. Just a couple, to make things less boring
I have been growing Daylillies in pots for about three years. They definately need dividing but have done beautifully. I leave them on the deck all winter long and have had no problem. All I do in water and fertalize and remove the brown leaves.
