Our cherry tree trunk is split in the middle but still living. What can I do to help it?

Generally when things like that happen it's best to do nothing, just leave the tree alone and let it try to heal itself. Depending on how bad the split is though the tree may not recover, or it could pose a danger if part of the tree might fall so it may be better to remove it if that's the case.
the main trunk itself is probably 5 ft in height before it starts splitting off into limbs. The split itself goes down to within about 2 ft of the ground. You can see through to the other side.
If the tree would pose a danger if the split continued and one piece broke off, then I would remove the tree. Otherwise there's really nothing you can do to repair the damage, either the tree will be able to heal itself or it won't. So if it's not a danger if it breaks all the way, then I'd leave it alone and hope for the best.
