I have a very, very narrow strip between my driveway and my house. This year it is planted with a few shade annuals but i would like some evergreen shrubs and the miniature rhodys and azaleas were recommended. I love those plants so my problem is solved.
But I need to know the best nursery; one that send decent-sized plants so I don't have to wait 5 years for them to bloom. Can anyone help?
best source for miniature rhoderdendrons/azaleas
I don't have a nursery suggestion - our zones are too far apart. I would be concerned, however, if either your foundation or your driveway is concrete since they might make your soil pH too limy. If one or both are concrete, do a soil test before you buy rhodies or azaleas.
As long as the concrete isn't new, I don't think the pH is a problem. Every house in my neighborhood has Rhodies and Azaleas right near the concrete porches and foundations and they do fine.
If you're looking for larger plants of miniature cultivars, I'd figure out what kinds you want first then see who might have them in your area. I don't know where Lake Toxaway is though. Even one gallon size Azaleas will bloom.
There is a small canal-type ditch between my house and the strip of land. It is designed to promote drainage as my driveway is slightly higher than my house. So lime is not a problem.
Lake Toxaway is in the southwest corner of NC, up in the mountains. While listed as zone 7 with the rest of Western North Carolina, (anything west of Charlotte), at our altitude we are in zone 6. I live in Transylvania County, known as the land of waterfalls
OOoooh, nice! Reminds me of Chimney Rock...
Chimney Rock is only about 40 miles away. I left west of Chimney Rock in the next county over. We have over 250 major waterfalls in our county which is the 3rd smallest out of 100 in our state.
