CLOSED: Odd looking Bug

Newton, NJ

Hello- I found this odd looking bug in my garden yesterday and I am pretty sure it isn't eating anything it shouldn't - I was wondering if anyone knows what it might be?

It's a Click Beetle (Alaus oculatus). Larva is called a Wireworm and can be destructive in large numbers. Adult feeds on nectar. Usually not considered a garden pest. Turn it on its back and you'll see why it's called a Click Beetle!

The larva lives underground and feeds on roots....gotta be a lot of them to be a problem

Well thanks OldNed - I never saw one before but now I cant say that anymore!
Glad I probably dont need to be concerned! I did turn it over by the way and nearly
jumped right outta my socks! LOL...I did do some reading after you told me what it was
I read that it can do serious damage to crops. Hopefully it wont consider my flower garden
a dinner buffet! Has anyone out there had trouble with them before. I live in
NorthWest Jersey and there are alot of farms out here.

The larvae of this beetle eat the larvae of wood-boring beetles, so this Elater beetle is definitely on our side.
There are thousands of Elater / Click beetles, some are pests.

He's big . isn't he? My son spotted one on the high school track, perfectly camouflaged for the asphalt with gravel worn through!
